How do I Thresh

I've been trying to Thresh support quite a bit lately, as I think he's a super fun champ with clear potential in nearly any situation.

Most of the time when I play him, I set up engages pretty well - hook the carry, put a lantern down for my ADC, when ride my hook in there and flay them on the way. This usually works fine for a kill, so long as my ADC actually engages with me and grabs the lantern I clearly threw for them. However, even though I'm pretty good about setting up kills and such, I'm terrible about getting out alive. In a game last night I had 40-some assists, but around 15 deaths as well. I was the highest assister by far on both teams, but had the highest deaths on my own team by far as well.

Is this a good trade-off, or am I just doing something terribly wrong? Sure I'm setting up kills but I hate being a feeder, lol. Does anyone have any pro-tips for playing Thresh, particularly in the staying alive department? I've watched vids on how to lane with him, and I follow those guides the best I can. Sometimes however I feel like I play too aggressive, perhaps take too many autos from the enemy carry. I'm not sure. Halp!

Don't reactivate Q unless you know you can get out safely. Usually just landing a Q lets your ADC deal a bunch of damage.

To thresh, you beat the grain with a flail.

You know what you're doing wrong. Just stop taking soo much aggro for free. The trade in kills are not worth if the adc gets the gold from killing you first before dying to yours.

In the end, just ask yourself is this a high probably win solution without me dying? If so, do it; if not, do not engage.

Its all about the laning / plays

and ask yourself a few questions....

1- Is this fight / trade going to result in anything if you get a kill? <- The most important thing to ask.. 2- Do u know where the rest of the enemy team is to make a safe play? 3- How much dmg can they do before I pop? 4- how much dmg can your team do before you pop?

If you can answer those 4 questions in a positive manner, ie. yes, yes, they're not fed, and Tons of dmg, then go deep, otherwise play safe and wait for mistakes.

a 1 for 1 kill trade is not worth it unless either

  • you are behind ex. if you had a 4k gold lead on them... say 5k to 9k and you started trading.. eventually it will be 6k to 10k... 8k to 12k... 10k to 14k well all of a sudden that 4k lead is meaning less and less as it keeps going shit and be end game where its 58k to 62k, the lead doesnt exist
  • if trading lets you take an objective then thats fine too
  • or if their support gets the kill, then lul

this is why i play sona/soraka.. i rather we live than they die

If you have 15 deaths and 40 assists, and your carries are making it out alive, you're doing the right thing. Supports put the team first.

As for the enemy carry, harass when they're getting a minion so they can't react back w/o using abilities, but don't do that if you're putting yourself in the path of a Blitzcrank or something just as bad. When you're not harassing, don't get too close to the enemy carry.
