Advice on Champs

I have the money available for the most expensive champions, and I would like to some advice/thoughts from the community about what exactly to buy. I mainly play Top or Mid, and I am looking for a champ that can dish out a nice amount of damage while being solid all around. I was previously looking at either Zed or Aatrox, and I would like to hear more about more potential options. My thoughts on Aatrox: From what I can see, Aatrox is a really nice champ, manaless, and deals good damage along with good sustain in lane. However, some negatives are that champions who have a lot of CC at their disposal can easily deal with Aatrox making it hard. Thoughts on Zed: Really nice damage as well as strong laning potential. However his damage/usefulness falls off late game and his ultimate can be avoided with Zhonya's among other escape options. Lastly, he has a nice escape. However Zed is an Assassin, and that's not what I'm looking for. I am looking for a hero that while not being too squishy is able to deal good damage to everyone, not single target lockdown like Zed does. Also, to narrow down the selection, please chose a champion that does Attack Damage instead of an Ability Power champion. Please give me some feedback as well vote on the champion poll and list why you voted on a particular champ. Many thanks!

If you're looking for a champion that has a safe laning phase, but good teamfight potential, then I would recommended other champs. Also, I would like to mention champions that aren't "flavor of the month" or champions that are most likely going to be nerfed and never seen again.

  • Morgana mid : Disgustingly safe early game with her soil (W), just throw W, go for a coffee and come back, easy CS. Her ult is super useful in teamfights, so is her E when your ADC is being CC'ed to the ground. She has decent tankyness for a mage (with RoA and her E, along with her CC), good damage, good AoE, good CC.. just overall fantastic. She doesn't have a whole lot of counterpicks, so it's worth looking into her.

  • Renekton top : Some might think he's falling, but he's still very strong. Sustain in lane (Q), stun (W) and mobility (E), each that can be empowered with his fury. His ult makes him very tanky. Late game he's more of a damage soaker that can peel for carries while ditching out a decent amount of damage. He doesn't have a whole lot of counterpicks, so it's worth looking into him.

Jax top: strong damage, good scaling, tanky, good gap closer, can dodge, good burst and sustained damage, and hard to counter.

Top/Mid?

Morgana

She even just got a TU so playing her without a skin isn't nauseating now (it actually looks really nice, now). For all the reasons previously mentioned. Morg's my main woman. Plus she's absurdly flexible role-wise.. top, mid, support...

Second place: RekSai .High mobility, strong map pressure, even after the nerf good poke (which is tied to the ability you'll be maxing first anyway!), remarkably good waveclear, and like Morg, built-in sustain. Not as strong CC-wise, but hers is AoE.

Top Lane Champs:

Garen = safe laning (as long as you back off now and then to regen health), great waveclear, no resources needed, can still do some mean damage while being tanky.

Nasus = insane scaling on his Q if he's allowed to farm, powerful slow, good in team fights with ult and E.

Riven = Ehhhh... She's pretty good, and a goddess if she gets fed, but half of top (give or take a few) counters her merely for being tanky/self-sustaining or having CC. Still working on her myself to be honest, but if you want the struggle, she can be VERY rewarding.

Tryndamere = Depends on your laning phase, but he can wreck very early with his ability to gain up to 35% crit based on fury. After that he is basically a melee ADC that either split-pushes or runs into team fights with his ult to take out the squishies and to clean up.

Mid Lane Champs:

Diana = She's pretty mana-hungry in the early game if you mindlessly spam abilities, but she has both amazing Akali-like burst and resilience when she gets ahead and an item or two. Can be built for burst or sustained damage, great waveclear with her passive.

Cassiopeia = After version 2.5 of her rework, this snake one again has a VERY venomous bite. She refunds and REGENS her mana by using E to last hit minions, so she can be in lane for a while if you haven't harassed too much. Poison your opponent once and she can unleash HUGE damage. Her ult is great for securing kills as well.

Mordekaiser = As long as you're careful, he's extremely powerful in lane. Shield passive, independence of resources, and rushing spell vamp make him very tough to beat down. Lots of burst in his kit. His ult can help you take down teams and objectives. WARNING: DFG's removal in 5.2 supposedly weakens his late game, but Riot most likely has something in store for him to compensate.

Heimerdinger = Probably my favorite safe-ish laner. Turrets freeze lanes, rockets for burst, grenades for CC. His ult really does answer a lot of split-second issues (Getting ganked? Ult + W. Stop a team from fleeing? Ult + E.) Be careful with mana early on.

Gnar strong dueling hardly ever lose lane.

DaBawesome1/16/2015, 9:23:26 PM1 votes

Voted Zed because he is more valuable to the current meta. Gnar is a good option as is Irelia for top. also Sion strong cc good in solo lain and jungle. GL

Personally If I had to pick one single champion I would probably pick Jarvan IV because he can go top, jungle and hold mid on his own. He counters many ranged cheese picks and can carry his team while being tanky and going for initiation or building dmg tiamat/lw and dunkin enemy adc/support/apc.

But if you want to carry harder and have a lot of fun Riven or Jayce seems like a good choice.

Zed's great...but keep in mind he has an impending nerf. Top lane...Gnar, Riven, Jarvan, and Cassiopeia (yes Cassiopeia top is now a thing) are all currently excellent choices and everyone has some fun niches to their playstyle that won't get boring in my opinion. For mid lane...I admit I adore some Fizz cheese. But other enjoyable options in my opinion are always Jayce, Orianna, LeBlanc, and Veigar.

i like Quinn :3 She can top as well, even though she's a marksman for bot lane.

Anyways, I think it's better if you tried out the champions yourself. We could give you suggestions and stuff, but at the end it's up to you LOL. But yeah C:

So I hope this thread can still keep going after what I am going to say next. I just bought Aatrox and let me just say, he was a huge letdown. His full effectiveness always leaves him at around 70 - 80% Hp at all times. His W kind of sucks, the Blood Thirst heal isn't very effective unless you are below 50% health, and the flip side of the W, the Blood Price takes a lot of health early game, though it does deal huge damage in one hit. The toggling of his W is difficult to judge at times from situation to situation. Ganks make his W toggling harder to judge as you don't know what to do, stay alive or go down fighting. He is also very vulnerable to harassment as he doesn't escape very well after his Q - Dark Flight has been used. He just isn't suited to very aggressive play. Aatrox's strengths are really dealing good steady damage while staying alive and going full damage isn't the best way to do that. A hero with enormous burst potential can kill him because the only thing great about Aatrox is his sustain potential. He can lifesteal himself from nothing if you build Lifesteal + Damage items, but that's all he's got. Going tanky can be viable to an extent as his W allows him to deal massive damage with minimal health loss if you build tank. TL;DR : Don't buy him unless you want tons of grief and a hard-to-play champ.
