What are some tips for figuring out counter-picks?

I was wondering if there was some way that I could tell who might perform well against whom by looking at the champions' skill kits and/or basic stats. I would guess that most people who know counters get that information from playing tons of games, but for those of us who can't play a lot or are fairly new to the game, are there easy ways to figure out good counters?

Most of the time, you're better off playing a champion you're comfortable on versus taking someone "because they counter X" simply because you haven't put as much time into that so-called counter.

That's just my two cents, though.

First, think about the champion you are up against. What is their range? What do they rely on? how much damage can they dish and how fast? What do their spells/passive do? Lets take Darius for example. Melee Champ,AD based,burst/true damage, relies on his pull. Normally, this would be Ranged champ, similar burst, armor effecient with some way to avoid/escape his pull. Quinn does well against him,but needs to constantly stay out of range,as he can drop her with his ultimate. Quinn's Q blinds him, stopping basic attacks and her E is a nice response to his pull. When his pull is down its up to you to kite the crap out of him. As he relies on his pull, avoiding or escaping it is manditory. Good Luck and learn as much as you can.

The best way to learn what champion counters which is through experience. I highly recommend spamming alot of games with the champions you're trying to learn and finding out what champions they completely stomp (counter). Push the limits of your champion by trying to play aggressive at all levels to see how your champion does against the enemy champion. A counter simply means your champion does extremely well against the enemy in a 1v1 scenario.

there are apps for smartphones, sites that do that

for example you pick a champ it will tell you who its strong against and weak against

there are sites that contain this information, just quickly google it

Eventually, who counters who just comes to you naturally as a result of experience

I never thought the day would come where I knew every single champion and more-or-less generally what they do... sooner than expected too

it will tell you in the Champs profile who they counter and who counters them. It's under tips :)
