Let's talk support. v3

Awareness. Is probably the sole thing that separates +Gold supports from silver and below supports. Being aware of opportunities, and avoiding unfavorable situations. Constantly checking your minimap to track the enemy jungler and enemy laners, so that you can try to prevent your lane or someone else on your team from getting ganked. Also making the call to go get an objective after a fight, roaming when you see fit (your adc backed but you have full hp/mana - time to roam mid!). Things like this may seem minor, oh look at my minimap and i'll gain elo... easy. Its not only looking looking at your minimap, its the reason why your looking at it, to gain information and gaining elo comes down to how you use that information to your advantage.

I's say start from the ground up. Try playing as many supports you can and get a feel for one that you feel most comfortable with. I prefer ranged champs so i like playing Nami, Janna or Lulu. And once you get a champ then worry about in lane mechanics and the things supports should do after laning phase.

I'd recommend Nami. Her kit is ideal for a support. She has a stun + heal + auto buff + mass disengage for a team fight. If your starting to take supporting more seriously i'll note that if you devote time into playing Nami you'll most likely grow skill wise as a player.

Weaknesses/strengths with the other champs would be.... -Sona is mega squishy

+Sona can condition the player to deal with micromanaging through the use of her unique kit/she has a strong ulti for team fights/strong laning with poke and sustain

-Lulu strong laner, but lacks sustain in a 2v2 setting/not a favored pick in the current meta

+Lulu (I personally think) she's a hella good pick against assassins if she's played as a support (as soon as the assassin tries to go in to blow up a carry you poly them to make their life miserable)/her ulti is most effective with teams that alrdy have strong engages/a saving ulti

-Blitz... I like to think of him as a lazy support, but effective. If you play blitz you can gain elo easily but you'll be less aware of the little/most important things that supports do/ his kit offers little to no utility for a team/ his design is targeted towards blowing up a target/ he can be hard counted by someone who can play another all in support well. Also it can be hella discouraging if you keep missing pulls (but so is life, at least your trying).

+Blitz can cause hella high stress for your opponent with his grab. Can cause people to go on tilt easily(in lower/higher elo)/can make game changing pulls in the mid to late game/forces the enemy team to fight if someone is pulled(this is the only kind of counter play to fighting a blitz when pulled).

Support is probably the hardest role to try and gain elo with at lower elo, so I wanna start off with saying never give up, its possible to climb! Its just a bit trickier and you really have to play the game. It becomes easier when you understand match ups and have a good grasp as to what things your expected to do as a support (as well as the things you shouldn't be expected to do, as in, things the rest of your team should be doing).

When I first started playing ranked I was Silver and since then I have learned that its best to play your lane by ear. And when I say that I mean, play to the tempo of your adc. In one game you'll get an adc who plays super aggro and in another game you'll get one who only farms and waits for your stun/cc or the jungler to make plays. Your not expected to be a mind reader but you can pace yourself while laning and use your judgement to be an effective support. You just have to keep your cool if something goes unexpected and if you have to type to your adc to play less aggressive or less passive. A lot of the time you can get punished for playing over aggressive and thats when you have to play smart by placing wards when your lane is moving foward to back up your aggression. And other times you'll get adc's who play like a dead fish and afk farm, which is really poor because for one you'll be going in for a trade and find yourself in a 1v2 scenario with your adc just farming and two no pressure is being put in the lane so if the enemy bot lane roams your lane won't be able to match it. If this happens to you, try pinging what enemy you want to focus or give your adc a heads up that he/she needs to stop the afk farm and put pressure in the lane.

TLDR: if your trying to play a utility based support it'll take time and patience to move up the ladder but if you get good at it you'll have solid mechanics and should get diamond easily. Also you could always opt out and play aggro all in champs/high based ap supports to get kills, but you'll still need to work on your mechanics to do certain things to close out games.
