Let's Talk Support v3 with more Theory Crafting

Hey there fellow summoner, my IGN is Pãwz and I main support. I've gotten to Diamond 3 twice this season and currently stand at Diamond 5. I want to talk about supports, and hopefully introduce new perspectives on the role for others and myself. What supports do you prefer, what support items (or non support items) do you like, what runes do you take? I'd like to promote the mindset that there are different ways of support. I'd prefer to focus on mechanics as a support in this thread, but will talk about anything support related. If you want to come watch me play, I stream at http://www.twitch.tv/booufo I aim to show high quality gameplay / theory crafting ideas with champs or items. I'll be checking in between games on the thread. So... let's talk about supportsLulu ...

i like supports that bring lots of cc because in bronze im probably going to be the only one peeling for my adc so i like champs that can really stop an engage like janna morgana or thresh

I prefer tanky supports, since I main top lane, but that leads to a few problems. I absolutely love the way a low initiation top laner protects carries, and so I end up playing tanky supports in an attempt to do this all game, and that doesn't typically end well. You just can't take as much damage early on as a tanky, farmed up top laner can and so that sort of positioning ends up being a detriment to the lane.

I usually do better with squishy supports, though I'm still trying to figure out why that is. From what I can tell I still play just as aggressively, if not more so since I have more range. I want to be that support who manages the enemy lane so that my carry can farm unhindered, but I have yet to find a way to fully use my experience as a top laner to make that happen.

I find them to be too forgiving at the moment, all meta supports are annoyingly hard to punish, and drag this annoyance to teammates as well.

example:leona being insanely tanky(it can get awfully stupid at times, where you are ganked far away from tower but 3 people simply aren't enough to kill you before the adc can get them off you),thresh being tanky+having an immense disengage, janna being janna(well at least, that is her idenitity, whereas thresh is so forgiving because,well...reasons...) morganas spell shield(on top of snare+ult which can also be used to run away),zilean's ultimate+speed boost/slow.

I feel like a lot of risk got lost in the way supports are played in s4,making them pretty damn faceroll(i mean i used to get pretty angry when ahri got caught like a moron then facerolled away with her ult,now it's me throwing the box when caught like a retard or better yet throwing lantern for allies who do the same(such skill, wow)).

Also a lot of lane dominance got lost to the adc(why exactly does lucian outtrade me at level 1? how is that supposed to make sense,he is the hyper scaling carry,i guess the support doesn't deserve to be strong at any point in the game, but at least we aren't facerolled by assassins as much as in s3,so that's nice),which is something i tolerated before the itemization changes(to be fair i'd say they were the second least influential class at that time,so asking for nerfs would make no sense),but now that they have a monstrous lategame,WHY IN THE BLOODY HELL DOES LUCIAN OUTTRADE ME AT 1?!

I personally prefer supports who offer high amounts of CC and/or utility that isn't gold dependent, like Thresh and Braum. Having gold on them definitely helps, as they can get more items/wards and be useful in general, but if you fall far behind at least they can still do "something" technically while all available gold is soaked up by the carries. The other support type is AP support. They are okay, but usually I feel you need to win lane with those champions, so its incredibly frustrating for me when I'm playing ADC and lose lane because the support doesn't offer anything to the laning phase and then during the mid game they are off split pushing and AFK farming, instead of grouping.
