How do I know if I am good?

Repost due to placing it in the wrong section. Even I don't know where to place things here since the forums became boards...

"I've been playing league for a bit now at level 12, and from the looks of it I've been failing in multiple games recently from my point of view.

Being in the wrong position, overextending...anything bad you can think of. It's almost like I unintentionally feed. How do I know if I'm even good if all I ever do is fail? I've gone 0/30 in a match before...and that's bad."

you just need to keep playing and you will continuously pick things up and you'll be feeling good before you know it. The biggest thing I can tell you is focus on honing your skills in this order.

  1. playing safely (not dying)
  2. improving your cs (but prioritize 1)
  3. Focus on outplaying your opponents and improving team skills (Once 1 and 2 are satisfied)

Hmmm. Really it's a tough question to answer. I took this approach to trying to improve my own gameplay:

Focus on CS. Gold may not win the game but it certainly doesn't hurt. Unless your getting every CS from every wave you have room for improvement. Play SAFE. Part of playing safe is warding. Do not push your lane past the mid point unless you have vision to know if someone is coming to gank your lane. Don't rage. If your losing (opponent has more CS and/or kills than you.) Don't pick a fight with them. They already have an advantage. Don't make it easy for them by dying more. Record your games. If you have the capability to locally record your games so you can rewatch them, you will be able to focus on what you did wrong and come up with a plan to improve.

I have been playing for a long time and I still have a lot of room for improvement. I like to think I am a decent player, but I still make mistakes, a lot. :(

Unless you already have MOBA experience (or at least significant RTS experience) you should probably not jump into PVP quite so soon. Plus you get full XP/IP from beginner bots until summoner level 20, which will level you up faster than losing a lot of PvP matches unless you're playing enough to max out on co-op XP per day. When you can handily thrash intermediate bots, you're probably ready to test the waters with PvP.

Best things to focus on are the ones that Tristaen pointed out:

  1. Don't die. Unless you are pretty sure you can win a fight with an enemy, don't fight them. Don't overextend without vision of the enemy team.
  2. Learn to CS. If you want to be really good, practice in customs until you can do it in your sleep.
  3. Ward (this will help with the not dying).

Beyond that, try lots of different champs and roles to figure out what you like.

I took a look at my own ranked stats just now. I die a mean of 4 time per game. Most Deaths : 12 over 300 games. And there still a lot of room for improvement. So yeah, I dont want to hurt your feelings but 0/30 is awefully bad. You need to work on that part.

Don't be too harsh on yourself doe. At level 30, the game just start (if you like the game that is). Riot is not worried that much in the lower level balance. When you get a new quintessence or a new runes tiers, you get much stronger. People get matched with a set of tier 2 agaisnt a set of tier 3 during a few levels. the most noticeable will be level 20 but 10,15,20,25 will all do that to some extent. You lose a lot of games, then win a lot of games. And you are right wondering if your skill really matter at that point because honestly it's pretty much random.

Work on your death count and just enjoy the game and have fun.
