Would buying relic shield as an ADC instead of doran's 1 or longsword 3 be a bad idea?

Your support will get more gold from relic shield gold share allowing them to buy sightstone or whatever they need slightly faster. You lose some damage and lifesteal but you get some hp and more pots.

Double relic double bruiser botlane seems to work depending on the matchup. Maybe it works because of the quick level 2 because the first 2-4 minions that die get executed.

Is it a bad idea for the adc to grab relic shield or is this something that might actually work (most likely at low elo)?

you sacrifice too much laning potential and that item is absolutely useless in terms of fighting. where you can still get use out of your dorans in team fights or lane fights etc.

It was good back when they came out and the execution worked for everyone. Now you don't get enough in combat stats from it and while yes you will have a slightly earlier lvl 2, if i'm the opposing support you won't be living very long after. You can't hurt us or live very long. You can get the lvl 2, but I'm getting you out of lane before you know it.

While the idea of giving the support more gold is always a great idea, you'd still have more of a lane advantage as a whole for both you, and your support if you took a dorans blade.

By being able to trade with the enemy laners, you'll be doing your Support more of a favor than being able to give them more gold.

One thing about bot lane is that you rely on your lane partner, and that goes both ways. By keeping your damage as the ADC you keep your ability to trade and hold the lane with your support. The Support needs to be able to rely on you to output damage in any trade, while you rely on the support to provide the means to win the trade.

TL;DR- Its more efficient and more effective to buy Dorans Blade.

Double relic bruiser top started to become a thing when the item was first released. People were running 2-1-2 comps without a jungler and doing pretty well with it. Unfortunately, this was before Riot got smart and started to figure out that "diversity = good"; and killed that meta off by nerfing the relic so that it wasn't efficient enough to duo lane with two of them.

This is sad, since having a new meta (or at least a viable meta alternative) would have made things fresh again.
