Runes / Masteries for Alistar Jungle

Environmentalist··1 votes·639 views

I've been getting into Alistar jungle recently. The ganks from him are incredibly strong, and his mid - late game clear is far quicker than I ever expected. Even his team fights are great. My issue is very early game clear. It's a little slow, and his cool downs are pretty darn long. Right now I'm running 30 armor + 12 mr runes, which I know is pretty general and not the best, but it does for now. Masteries are 9/21/0. Any suggestions? Should I get CDR runes? mana regen? Thanks :)

Hey there!

I'm an avid Alistar player with over a thousand games played. I'm currently in high Plat. I could give you some ideas for how you could run it, but here's how I run my AD Alistar jungle. I take offensive masteries with points in attack speed and Butcher being very important. The Tough Skin line is also very important, since Bladed Armor accounts for a lot of your early clearing power. I use attack speed quints and marks with scaling armor and scaling cooldown reduction glyphs. Be sure you're stacking your passive. When you use an ability, your passive activates for three seconds. Wait for those three seconds to be up to maximize your passive. Take your E at level two, if you're not ganking immediately after your first camp. It speeds up clears considerably, since the cooldown is tied to your passive and the death of monsters.

Wicked! I will definitely give that a shot. Do you find AD Ali jungle is better? Generally I've been building him tanky with a bit of AP power, I find his mid-late game clear with AP is amazing. One Q and one E with a couple auto attacks and most camps are clear.

I wrote that on my break. I'm now home and will be monitoring the thread.

I personally don't play AP Alistar jungle. It's just a style choice. His AP builds offer more up front burst whilst his AD build easily provides more tank stats and dueling capabilities. I prefer the AD build, since his abilities generally have poor ratios. I think, total counting the three seconds of passive, they're ~250%. For a point of reference, most mages have significantly lower cooldowns and ~400% easily. If you're looking for better clears, AD Alistar will clear faster at most points in the game because a majority of his damage comes from basic attacks, since he's so heavily gated by cooldowns. However, we don't play Alistar jungle for the clears, do we?

Ha fair point. I was noticing that he was extremely strong going into a teamfight, but once I used all his abilities all I could really do was walk around and auto attack people, so I can see how AD would provide advantages. I'm going to give AD Ali jungle a try tonight. I appreciate the feedback :)

If you're playing an AP Alistar and you find you're not being targeted, build a Nashor's Tooth. It sounds a little awkward, but for the love of all that is holy, this shit works. If you already have tank stats and you're lacking offensive capabilities, the item does work very well. It has great synergy with your durability, since you'll be alive long enough to make use of the passive. The rest of the stats are all useful. However, I would not recommend building this item until you have one or two items, unless you're trying to be a backline diver. In short, Nashor's Tooth gives the sustained damage output that you're lacking compared to the AD build.

I'll comment a little bit on how I play Alistar in competitive. I basically just hug my carry. That's it. You are the GTFO button for your carries. The most important part of this is having cooldowns to match your opponents' cooldowns. Tank stats are necessary, since the longer you live, the longer you can peel. The trick is understanding just how much tank you need for the task you are trying to accomplish. In this case, it's just enough to survive as long as your carries. If your carry is dead, you should be running and not fighting (unless you are the carry but shhh).

Hahaha very true. I liked the comment at the end :P I gave the AD Ali a shot yesterday and was 2/0/22 by about 35 or so minutes. Unfortunately we ended up losing because every time I initiated, usually the enemy mid or adc, my team dipped as if they were too scared to follow me in. Haha, oh well. I was happy with my performance.

I'm really starting to enjoy the Ali jungle and I might get to the point where I have a couple mastery and rune pages for him depending on my team and / or the enemy team.

I really do appreciate the tips though!

I'll add you on this account, if you have anymore questions.

You should throw some attack speed in, and use masteries for the 5 plus 5 in runes for 10 starting cd. Those 2 stats will probably speed make a noticeable difference.
