Vel'koz tips and tricks

Hello guys tis I your friendly neighborhood league player, Ryokuzo. Now being the kinda guy who plays mid a lot with my home boy Velkoz or very rarely support (not a favorite of mine but it's fun with Vel'koz) I have learned a few tricks here and there. I like to start off with the best selections for summoner spells; summoner 7 and summoner 4 are good for sustain and quick get aways or catching that guy running way (unless your a geometry major then your good :P). While my preferred choice is summoner 7 and summoner 13 for sustain since you kind of burn mana a lot with this guy and people like to target you. Clarity also comes in handy for team fights when your team mates mana is low hit that clarity and continue finishing off that pesky enemy team.

Secondly is, how to use your geometrical skills properly with his Q. Aim it diagonally to hit those turret huggers, runners and to hit those hiding behind minions. You can also use enemy champs, minions, and monsters if angled correctly to hit them farther away. For the W I like to level it up more than the other spells since that is my minion wave clearer. Now for the fun part, your E, this is the most important key to your success, escape tool, and "bouncer". When melee champs are close to you try to put your E either in their walking path followed by your Q and W, or what I do mostly is place your E directly on you to either kill your opponent or run away.

Third is his build, after some messing around here are the two best builds for this guy. 1. Begin the game with item 1056 and either 2xitem 2003 or item 2003 item 2004. Now after you get a lot of gold with your W and possible early game kills head back to the base then get item 3093 (for quicker gold) and item 1028 withitem 1004 to build your next items. All in all you wanna build your Rod Of Ages quickly along with Morellenomicon for quicker CL reduction AP and sustainability. 2. Build this item 3020 item 3027 item 3027 item 3285 item 3151 item 3165 or this item 3174 item 3027 item 3020 item 3151 item 3165 item 3135

Now I know I basically just did a champion spotlight here but I think this info may be helpful. Also Vel'koz needs a lord of the rings sauron skin... or flying spaghetti monster skin. Also please feel free to leave comments and advice.

Okay, a quick look at your match history shows you do play Vel'koz this way...

So lets say that I do not agree with you.

The summoner spells, summoner 13 is largely passed over. Its cooldown is simply too long to be a reliable source of mana regeneration. Better to buy an item for it. summoner 7 , it has its uses, but in midlane you will usually be facing summoner 14 Ignite's grievous wounds ability counters Heal. So, summoner 21 becomes a more appealing option. summoner 12 is also pretty viable.

Now, for using his skills. Vel'koz's key here is his passive, his w, and the slow/stun on his q and e. By firing a w after a q or e, you can hit an enemy with both procs of the w. This will also fire his passive, causing large damage to an enemy. Comboing his skills like this I find essential to maximizing his damage. That of course, and his long range and kiting ability. With his slow/stun and the fact that you can fire w while moving Vel'koz has a lot of ability to keep his distance from an opponent while attacking them. Managing and maintaining this distance is critical to his survival because he's a squishy.

For his item build, I would be looking at item 3020 item 3285 item 3174 item 3135 item 3157 item 3151

The order you build them in changes on the game, with Luden's, Athenes, and Zhonya's being the typical early game choices.

Vel'koz has low AP ratios, particularly on his ultimate. Simply stacking big AP items on him like Deathcap is inefficient. He works better with alternative ways of increasing his damage. Luden's proc, Athenes' CDR, Liandries burn, and MR reduction are all ways to increase his damage that don't rely on AP. And there is still a pretty good amount of AP there. Zhonya's gives him a surviveability boost with its passive. You can also see that Athenes solves his mana problems and gives him MR, Luden's has movespeed for his kiting, and Liandries has HP on it. This gives us a pretty balanced boost to his defenses as well.
