I've seen good Riven players do a combo where they E > R > Flash > W > Auto > R2> Q but i have no idea how they auto fast enough after w to prevent the enemy from flashing away from the combo. Can anyone tell me how to cancel or shorten the lag between riven's w and autoattack?

You have to click the ground to give a move command during the W animation and then click your target to auto them. This is the less efficient method and is used before you have tiamat. If you have tiamat or hydra, hit the hydra active just before, but almost simultaneously with your W, it cancels the animation allowing you to Riven things.
Riven is crazy fun and her skill cap is insanely high. Enjoy.
