Trying To Teach New Players (And There's A Diamond IV Troll)

I have a friend, level 25, who is buying runes now. Some diamond IV guy is telling her to get AD runes for mid AP champions. He is telling her it is for last hitting and wants to openly debate me and another friend on how taking AD runes is better on an AP mid. She believes him because he is Diamond. What the hell can I tell her. Is this dude actually trolling level 25s.

Wasn't sure where to put this thread, old forum actually had a Player Behavior but this new one... I'm hoping this forum will help convince my friend, this is seriously bothering me

Edit: She mains and only plays Katarina right now. She doesnt play any other roll. He isn't serious is he?

He is technically correct but at the same time isn't as well. A lot of people use AD runes even as AP mid's to help them last hit as well as harass the enemy champion with AA's (Which a ranged mid should be doing as often as possible since at early levels auto attacks still hurt as much as spells and are resource free).

Although, it's mostly preference. Attack Damage runes will become more and more obsolete as the game progresses, while Magic Penetration runes will become more and more powerful as the game progresses and Ability Power runes will offer you a nice power spike around the mid game when you get your first item with decent ability added onto your already bonus ability power.

As Katarina, I would probably go Magic Penetration/ability power myself but Attack Damage runes are still a good choice. Reason I choose this is because Katarina already has a very weak early game and doesn't shine until mid-late game and just survive the early game until I can reach that mid game power spike to make some plays.

Don't forget Kat's ult scales with ad pretty well.

So the runes are not going to waste...

Consider it a flex buy... those runes can be used on everything from support to top, will help her to cs, still scale with her ult, and let her early auto attacks deal more damage to enemy champs.

that being said if she plays Kat I'd suggest getting the standard one... then working towards the other two...

Standard Ap: Magic pen(red), Armor(Yellow), MR(Blue), Flat AP(Purple) Ap vs AP : Magic pen(red), AP per lvl(Yellow), MR(Blue), Flat AP(Purple) Ap vs AD : Magic pen(red), Armor(Yellow), Ap Per lvl(Blue), Flat AP(Purple)

I'm D4 and that set of runes can be used on almost every mage in the game if you manage your mana well.

I know some people do it if the midlaner has a hard time csing, like Anivia.

Mid lane champs with low base damage tend to have ah harder time last hitting and therefore people end up getting some flat Ad runes to help them in laning phase. Its not mandatory and if your pretty good with last hitting with the champion you dont even need to bother with ad runes imo.

I'd only consider it if you really can't CS... cs is also a lot more important in Diamond because you can't count on scoring kills/assists for gold as easily as in lower tiers so cs make a huge difference. Most midlaners have sufficient waveclear in their abilities to be able to use skills to score all of the cs after level 5 or so and hence I really think ad marks on an ap mid are less useful than magic pen...

That all said, she should buy ad marks anyways since she'll need them for adc, as well as most jungle and top laners and some supports and ad mids. So it's not the worst to buy them at 25, if she wants to see if they help her cs enough to be worth using.

I agree with the ad runes can work, but there are so much better options, especially if you have no trouble csing.

o-o tbh, I would have more faith in my friends' suggestions than that of players I don't know (especially in this game, GD :<) regardless of their rank.

Máv sums it up pretty well for Kat.

Keep in mind that Kat is easily harrassed early game and tends to get poked down trying to cs. I wouldn't go AD runes just for the sake of csing.

Mmm, not just pros, I had assumed the standard mid page was hybrid pen reds since there's only like 2 magic pen difference? So you basically get more for hybrid pen (stronger autos and spells) Although the cost isn't something to ignore x-x;

On Kat it isn't too bad as she scales partially off AD plus it's easier to learn to cs better with AD runes.
