Best Toplaners in season 5

What champs are looking like the strongest for season 5? looking to main top this season. I haven't played too many games so i dont have a lot of time to test anything out. I have played a few Jax games tho and he feels very strong. The only other champs I've played are Wukong and Pantheon. Someone told me that Hecarim and Dr Mundo are good picks right now for top lane? true or no?

Renekton is very strong, be sure to rush brutalizer before anything else. No one can 1v1 you if you rush it.

Keep in mind we're still feeling out the new season. There are a few things going on in top lane right now to keep an eye on.

  1. Ranged champs are going up there a lot more often. Lulu, Vayne (I still think this is a bad pick, but it's happening), Kalista, Quinn, Ryze. Kiters are going top, making the easily kitable champs less viable in the top lane.
  2. Anyone who is a singular threat does well in top. Gnar, rumble, Irelia, Mundo, Maokai. Even if they build tanky, they are threatening enough due to their kits, CC, gap closers (except Mundo) that they can't be ignored and left alone. Especially with TP, since they can be anywhere on the map if your team is warding properly.
  3. The jungle changes are reinforcing the isolation of top lane. You need a champ that is a strong duelist and can 1v1 fairly well, or be able to be very safe and sustain themselves in lane. Junglers can't be as prevalent in ganks and pressure as they used to be, or risk falling way too far behind. Pick someone who can survive and keep themselves up in lane.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks a bunch this helps a lot. I just found a "Solo queue tier list", im not sure how accurate the list is but it seems pretty decent to go by. I played Maokai a bit when he first became popular, I'll have to start playing him again haha.

I like Garen a lot in top lane; so long as you play safe, he can stay in lane for a friggin long time. His banes are ranged champions and constant harass, though.

Also good IMO:

Renekton Darius Aatrox Volibear

I don't know what happened but I played Mundo not too long ago--and got ass fucked bad. I had the same setup that I always had. The runes, tanky masteries and it seemed that I just ate all damage like crazy. No idea why. Thought it was a bug and who knows, it might be.

I still swear by Cho'gath. 100% AP ratio, and 140% AP ratio on the rest of your burst if you want to become a mage. Or you can become massively tanky with 900 free hp. Or you can do what I do, and become an AP bruiser who tanks for his entire team while walking up to their adc and bursting them down with an 800 true damage ultimate.

You're prob right with hec and Shyvana. I was thinking renekton too but I don't have him atm. With champs like Jax, Wu and Panth I like to build damage first to get a early lead then build tanky to be relevant late game.

I'll have to check out Cho, seems pretty good.

Rumble's always a strong choice. I personally prefer Shen. I rush sunfire cape and poke with q and e and just farm up. Keep your eyes on everyone else when you hit 6 and you can make some really remarkable plays.

There are lots of champions that work well in top lane, but personally, I think poppy is a good pick, if only because nobody knows how to counterplay her.
