How to counter level 30s?
So on my last game we had this Yi we completed destroyed us. I looked him up and he is Gold. Is matchmaking really this off?

That can happen when a player has teamed with a friend they are teaching the game to. Things like that happen.
Ranked MMR and normal MMR seem to be separate. I ran into a player currently in diamond in a sub-30 normal game today. His ranked win rate was over 60% but his normal game win rate was much lower. He even started the game off with "mid or feed." I guess his normal MMR is lower since he feeds if he does not get what he wants. He went ahead and absolutely destroyed the enemy team almost by himself (see stats of Annie in my last game as warwick today on op gg or a similar site).
I cannot give a definite answer since I am relatively new to league. However, I know this problem exists in other games too. When your rank is different in different types of games, you can have a level 30 diamond player in rank with a lower MMR in normals, and thus get matched against them in normal games. I am level 18 now and most of my team/opponents tend to be below 30. Occasionally, a level 30 is part of one of my games. I think I have run into 3-4 silvers, 1-2 golds, 1 plat, and 1 diamond in 90 or so games. I might be off by a few, but I tend to pull the game info on op gg when it starts, so the vast majority of games seem to be balanced teams.
Hmm, I recommend you play team builder. Try for more popular times of the day so you can get other low level players. Other than that, Yi's destroy everyone. Kind of the plague of LoL.
The curse of YI.....
Even if a yi has a bad laning phase.. the game continues long enough, he will eventually become a threat. He often becomes the focus and cc becomes your best friend when facing him. I enjoy games where i know the opposing player is higher ranked. It kind of pushes me to want to defeat him/her all the more.
However i know what you are saying. matchmaking can be all over the place sometimes. Peak hours would provide more players so more likely to be matched with similar levels.
I'm assuming that you are pre-level 30. If this is the case, you do have a weaker start than them, but just keep that CS up and don't feed and by end game the couple of points they get from runes/masteries shouldn't matter later in the game :)
