Could someone give me a quick coaching lesson on runes?

Hi guys,

I'm hoping someone can help me set up optimal, universal pages that I can make.** I used a reddit post a while ago to make the ones I have now** (including a couple I made myself) but I find myself either not even using half of them most of the time or not using the correct ones, most of the time.

I need tips on what's optimal for each role, such as tank, support, mage, assasin, rather than each position such as top, mid, etc. I have a couple pages I barely ever use because I either just don't get those positions ever due to someone else calling it, or I just haven't dabbled in that particular role as often as say support, which I consider to be my main. I have at least 2 champs for each role I can play strongly, so I am comfortably filling in.

Here are my pages, organized for if you just want to see what I have for top or whatever. Edit: Apparently you can view the whole album in Boards now, but I posted the individual links anyway.

Album: http://imgur.com/a/chHBK

ADC: ADC AS ADC

Support: AP AD Tank

AP Mid Vs AP Vs AD

Top Bruiser vs AD Bruiser vs AP Fighter vs AD Fighter vs AP

Jungle AD Farm Hybrid AP

AD Mid Assassin

Edit2: For runes I have 9 of each of the following, unless otherwise specified:

Marks: Flat Armor, Armor Penetration, AD/Physical Damage, Attack Speed, Hybrid Penetration, Magic Penetration. Seals: Flat Armor, Physical Damage, Flat Health, 7x Mp5 (No idea where those came from), Armor per level, Health per level. Glyphs: Ability Power, Physical Damage, 5x Attack Speed, 6x Cool down Reduction, Magic Resist, 8x Mp5 Glyphs (Probably where those 7 Mp5 Seals came from), Ability Power per level, Cool down reduction per level, Magic Resist per level.

Quintessences: I have 3 of each of the following unless otherwise specified Ability Power, Armor, Physical Damage, Attack Speed, 1x CDR, 2x Health, 2x Health Regeneration, Lifesteal, 1x Magic Penetration, 1x Magic Resist, Move speed.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out. I'm trying to to improve my game all around and right now I feel like one of my weakest areas is my understanding of rune pages, runes, and their application and effects to in game scenarios.

Well, seeing as no one else has chimed in here...

Personally, I think that going crazy with rune pages is kind of a waste of time. Like you said, you don't end up even using most of them. I have all 20 pages unlocked, but I think I only have 13-14 filled.

I would only spend time creating situational rune pages for specific champions that you play. For example, I play a lot of Thresh, so I have 3 setups for him depending on the enemy team, plus a generally tanky setup as a fallback. I have a set that's focused on cooldowns and roaming for when I'm confident we'll win lane, a set that's focused on defense and regen for facing opponents with a lot of poke, and set that's focused on damage and tankiness for opponents we can all-in against.

I don't play jungle much, so I have one rune page for jungling. It has armor and attack speed. It's not optimal for a lot of champions, but it's good enough for most.

Pick the champion or role you play the most, try to envision the 3 primary types of opponents you'll face (i.e., magic dmg, physical dmg, easy lane). Build rune pages to suit. Don't waste your time creating pages for every situation imaginable - there's not enough return on investment in my opinion.

Some general notes: -You probably overvalue scaling stats. Things like cdr/lvl aren't that impactful most of the time. You could swap out for flat cdr (7.5%, throw in 2 points in cdr masteries for 10%), or instead get mr -It's ideal to set up pages to match particular champions, rather than particular roles. For example, I have 2 rune pages dedicated to anivia that i would never take on almost anyone else (mpen reds blues quints+ hp/lvl yellows/ hpen reds ap blues ms quints hp/lvl seals) because it just wouldn't make sense. You could consider making a more universal page for one of your lesser played roles, and making more pages for champions you play more (i'll give generalized pages in a sec) -Choosing the correct rune page for a particular game should be pretty simple. First, pick which offensive runes match your champion best. Then, judge which defensive runes best counter your lane opponent/enemy team. Pick the rune page that matches best (prioritizing the correct offensive runes over defensive)

Some adjustments i would make to the pages you have: -On your ADC pages, I would prefer to see a little more armor with the amount of HP you have. The way I do this is with a single armor quint, but both of your setups are a little different than mine. It might be preferable to just swap out one hp seal for an armor one. -On your atk spd AD page, I would very much recommend an armor quint. These are later game ADCs that mostly need to survive the lane phase. that extra armor will likely help you a lot more than the ad. -On your AP Support page, I would take at least 5x mr/lvl glyphs rather than flat. You shouldn't need more than ~4 flat mr glyphs for lane phase, and scaling is obviously better later. -On your AP v AP page, i wouldn't take ap/lvl. 9 ap isnt goign to make a difference late game, you're better off either taking flat AP or more mr. -I notice you have some cdr on all of your top lane pages. If you strongly prefer that, I'm not going to be able to talk you out of it, but MR or mr/lvl is much more versatile. I would recommend against taking the 5% cdr on the vs ap pages in particular; that mr could really make a difference. -On your assassin page, armor/lvl might make sense on graves/corki, but it doesnt make sense at all on a melee assassin. Personally I'd recommend making this into two pages, one with armor/lvl (if you prefer that fro graves/corki) and one with flat armor. I dont really think you need your hybrid jungle page, so you could use that slot for the extra page.

Generalized rune pages for each role: AD reds, Armor yellows, mr blues, AD quints You can take this as any AD top laner against any opponent and it'll be k

Hpen reds, armor yellows, mr blues, AP quints You can take this as any AP ranged mid or top against any opponent and it'll be k

mpen reds, armor yellows, mr blues, AP quints Same thing for melee ap mid or top

Attack speed reds, armor yellows, mr/lvl blues, ad quints This should be fine as any jungler. Maybe not ideal, but you can deal

AD reds, 5x armor yellows 4x hp yellows, 5x mr blues, 4x atk spd blues, ad quints This works for any adc. Again, maybe not ideal but manageable

Armor reds, 5x hp yellows, 4x armor yellows, 5x mr blues, 4x mr/lvl blues, ad quints This is fine for any support. Probably a little too tank heavy for most ranged ones and a little too dmg heay for melees to be ideal, but again it can work

As a side note, here's a link to a rune efficiency table i uploaded some time back: http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=4418901

A few numbers aren't quite accurate anymore (crit dmg value, for example) due to item changes, but theyre still pretty close.
