Whatever the team composition Im doing, my teams do zero damage but get one shot am I supposed to do something during the fights?

You could start by looking up how to play TFT, because you are doing something wildly wrong.

And no, it is "played" entirely during setup, the battles are at the mercy of wild RNG.
