Melee champs focus

How does the system decide which unit will be targeted by a melee unit? Yesterday I played a game in which the last opponent was performing a light / blademaster composition with a golden Aatrox. In the first round I had only one unit in the front line and his Aatrox headed straight for my golden Veigar in the back line, focused and killed him in no time. In the second round I moved Veigar to a different position to avoid that situation. Guess what? His Aatrox again headed towards him, ignoring the other units. Veigar barely had the time to cast a skill.

Melee units attack the nearest champion. In the case of 2, I'm not sure how it's decided. The only way the aatrox would get to your Veigar would be with an assassin spatula item or if your frontline was further away than your Veigar.

If your frontline was berserkers and they jumped to other enemies then aatrox may also go somewhere else but unsure on that one.

Also if aatrox couldn't attack anyone close due to bodyblocks then he would seek out the newest closest target I believe.

So basically your Veigar wasn't positioned well for the situation.
