It is bigger, which is why you lose LP at 4th place, cos the game expects you to win and be placed better.

OP had indicated his MMR by playing with his friend. Which makes the game this he is better than his rank when he doesn't belong there yet. Which is why he'll lose LP at top 4.

Wait what? I thought 4th place always gives LP, I never lost LP the couple of times I ended 4th and always gained a small amount of LP from that. How does that work?

When your MMR is higher than your competition within the game, the game assumes you will win at a higher position. so if you don't win to that higher position, you'll lose LP instead.

MMR fluctuations and discrepancies like that typically happen when people play with their friends and their true MMR gets messed up. Maybe the friend was coaching him, maybe they were holding units to help each other or deny other people. Sometimes it's just the MMR averages just get shifted.

Regardless of how they play with their friends, their MMR gets messed up because they played with friends.
