Any chance of a ranked ARAM?

Linna Excel··4 votes·938 views

I really love ARAM games, a little more than SR even. It's been around for a year now and it's popular enough. Is it possible we can get a ranked version of it?

Were you looking for a probability?

0% chance of ARAM ever getting ranked. Hope that answers your question.

The way it is, people could just buy champs that are good in aram and then have a much higher chance of winning arams. And even if they made it so that anyone can get any champ in aram, there's still too much luck involved in aram for a ranked version of it to be made.

40 champion requirement before champions are rolled each team can ban to keep a team from getting destroyed. While aram is a lot of luck you cannot say it does not take some skill

No. RNG is something you never want in competitive gaming, especially when it comes to team based games that totally rely on your team composition working with decent synergy to compete at a high level of play (virtually the definition of a MOBA)

MTG has randomness (luck) and it has had a lot of competitive gaming.

If I'm fine with chance, why can't I have a ranked version of ARAM?

Youre now talking about a card game. Card games involve chance and skill equally, everyone accepts that who plays.

When it comes to competetive team-based games, as previously mentioned, almost any form of RNG (outside of in-game mechanics like crit chance) is highly frowned upon because you require synergy.

Saying its the same as a card game is exaggeration imo. Yes it involves more luck in getting a good comp but also more skill when getting a bad one. I get a lot out of most ARAMs I lose, it is only rare extreme cases where teams are so imbalanced that its not fun for either team. People with a mind for strict meta don't fit in ARAM but that doesn't mean it's all luck. It forces creativity in gameplay that I absolutely adore and would love a ranked version regardless of balance issues.

I didn't compare LoL to a card game - MTG is a card game. No exaggeration at all.

While some select few people like the idea, as a general concept you can't have that much RNG in competitive PvP gaming, it just doesn't work out and appeal to the masses.

If RNGs are a problem in ARAM, then solve the problem the way card games solve it: Duplicate tournaments.

  • All qualifying matches at the same tier draw from the same pool of 2-team-10-champion combinations, each played once and only once by each player on either side.
  • Upon queueing, the matched players all enter a game with one of these combinations, each receiving a random champion from the chosen combination without possibility of re-rolling.
  • The performance of each team is compared against all other teams who have played on the same side in the same combination by some numeric indicator (e.g. K-D+A/5).

Example combination (let's say at the bronze level): Cho'Gath, Sivir, LeBlanc, Thresh, Warwick (Blue) vs. Ashe, Janna, Gnar, Shaco, Sion (Red)

Every bronze player going through the qualifying matches would have played this combination once on blue and once on red.

Example comparison between 2 teams:

  • Team 1: 23/24/65 (Blue from example combination), 33/15/70 (Red from example combination)
  • Team 2: 29/12/70 (Blue from example combination), 20/17/55 (Red from example combination)

Team 1 scores 23 - 24 + 65/5 + 33 - 15 + 70/5 = 44 Team 2 scores 29 - 12 + 70/5 + 20 - 17 + 55/5 = 45

Then you've eliminated RNG yes, but it's no longer random and therefore no longer ARAM. It's just a single set composition you're forced to play on, no ability to pick comfort champs, no way to counterpick or circumnavigate hard counter kits.

Remember that in this system, every combination is played twice, once on each team. If you get hard-countered, somewhere down the road you will play as that hard-counter. Everyone gets to swim with and against the current the same number of times.

The point of ARAM is not to get comfortable with on-meta teams, speclialization or explicit picks. It is about making the best out of every composition, even off-meta or unbalanced ones. This mindset is different enough from standard SR ranked draft to warrant a completely different ladder.

But you're missing the entire point of ARAM - All RANDOM All Middle

No longer random.
