URF shouldn't come back until you make a new map for it!

#Please hear me out before you downvote!

URF mode was great, yes, but there was also some fundamental problems with it being on Summoner's Rift! For one thing, Blue buff is completely invalidated and basically pointless to have. 80% CDR and Free mana? Oh dear, whatever shall I do with this? Two, with the jungle changes, bringing URF back would result in junglers having powerful smites up at almost all times, along with being able to get jungle buffs from every camp in one go. Finally, objective buffs like Baron and Dragon are both devalued because of your strong base stats and obscenely easy to get with some champions lacking cooldowns. There are some other things like Wards being devalued due to the fast pace of the game mode, stronger emphasis on wall hopping/teleporting, etc.

What I propose is an entire new map when you bring back URF. Rather than using a 1:1 SR copy, let's get something new!

  • Same basic layout of SR. 3 lanes, 5 champs, a small jungle, some bushes, etc.
  • Replace Baron/Dragon with either A.) A teleporter that will swap between these two dens or B.) A new monster/creature that will require more than one champion present to deal with it.
  • Perhaps item-specific options for this mode. Frozen Heart might be cool but that cooldown and mana is kinda pointless, so let's make a similar reworked item for it. Same with unholy grail, morellos, etc.
  • Finally, mix up the jungle a bit so that there are buffs you want. Hell, put two red buffs there and I'm sure people would be content.

However, where would this new map be? Freljord? Ionia? Well, imo....

Let's put the map on Zaun. Replace the lanes of grass with streets, towers, and seedy back alleys. The contrasting map essence would be that one half of the map is an industrial wasteland full of hextech machinery, factory workers and more while the other half would be a disgusting slum/ghetto filled with gangs, mutated critters and sewage.

I actually really like that idea.

Also, while we're at it, please don't try to 'balance' this game mode by disabling champions like Kassadin, Sona, Ryze, Nidalee. Yes, all of them were very annoying, but all that did was make people find the next 'op' champ and use that; pretty soon all that would be left to pick would have been Yasuo (he didn't really get anything out of urf's buff tbh).

Ryze/Kassadin were banned because of actually broken reasons. Ryze could literally spell-lock you because of his passive (80% CDR + Runeprison = Never moving ever) while Kass had riftwalk on a super low cooldown without any sort of mana cost, so he could teleport anywhere at any time.

qetzel1 votes

He actually had to build some mana to use it though... Shame, really. I enjoyed doing a Weeping Angel with him.

ModCaptainMårvelous2 votes

Nope. Ryze could spell lock from level 3 onward.

qetzel5 votes

I was talking about Kassadin's Riftwalk. The mana gating was still there...

ModCaptainMårvelous2 votes

IIRC the gating didn't work because technically all abilities had 0 cost or something similar.

qetzel6 votes

They still had the mana cost, they just didn't use up the mana, if that makes any sense. I don't know how Riot coded it, but the mana costs were still there. I think of it as infinite mana regen rather than no mana costs.

There was no feeling in urf worse than hitting that fourth Riftwalk stack at level six and realising for the first time that champions still have a limited maximum mana.

it made sense to ban champs with completely URF broken abilities...although, with Soraka's new rework, would she still be banned?

also I loved it when I could go karthus and have my E infinitely on :D

Or they could just put URF on Crystal Scar with a Kill/Score count like they did with Ascension

Did they ever do anything about Brand's hadouken combo? I saw it once and it looked hilarious.

I actually think Urf should never come back. That shit was only fun for those who picked the most broken shit and ruined the game for every one else.

If Riot actually did what the OP is suggesting, I could see it being able to hold its own as a real mode. It needs adjustments of some sort to give it the sort of replayability that's required for a full-time game mode to be justified.

I agree with you, though. URF wasn't for me. I found it extremely stale after just a couple games. I think it's best kept as a featured mode that shows up once or twice a year.

AetherKingdom1 votes

Yea, Urf was the only game mode that had to have champions disabled due to non bug reasons. That in itself should show why it should never come back

Mughi of Ruckus1 votes

Actually they had to ban Vel'koz for the Poro King mode.

AetherKingdom1 votes

Velkoz was disabled due to visual glitches he caused, not because he was brokenly strong.

While I really like the idea, I don't think I'd be willing to wait for another 1+ years for a new map. The amount of time, work and testing needed to make a new map skin, items, and jungle camps wouldn't really be worth a temporary game mode.

ModCaptainMårvelous4 votes

Who says it'd be temporary?

(^:

Honestly though, URF was popular enough and had enough of a fan following that I'm certain it deserves to come back as a full game mode.

BundiChundi1 votes

There is no way they'd make it a full game mode. If it was who would ever play normals? If you have an option to play a game with 80% cdr and no mana costs, why would you want to play normally?

Another "Year?". They haven't made a new map in like 87 years.

I think part of the reason that Urf has been delayed so long (perhaps instead of them just waiting for April Fool's again) is that there are so many balancing "issues" with the mode. While i'd love to see the game mode back, and i like your ideas about giving it its own map i think this is a pretty big thing to ask for Riot.

Hey, but who knows, maybe this is what they've been working on this whole time!

Wullf2 votes

if URF comes back it will be for week ort two, won't it? Why would they make new map for it?

Pvt Prinny2 votes

Nothing to argue wih the original post. I'd just want to add this : either fuse URF and DOOMBOTS.... or fuse URF and HEXAKILL. that'd be funny. (suicidal for Doombots, but still funny!)

junglerboy161 votes

Frozen heart was actually REALLY strong on Blitcrank, because it gave him a whopping 200 extra shield from his passive, since his mana would always be full.

Jesus is Savior1 votes

Smite was nerfed on URF last time. It didn't have the same CDR as other summoner spells.

So no, it can still be on rift. They just need to make adjustments.

ModCaptainMårvelous3 votes

And what of blue buff being useless? What of items not being changed/edited to account for the mode? What of Baron/Dragon being far too easy to solo?

Sukishoo1 votes

It's not truly useless. You still gained EXP from it.. so there's that.

SwordGrunt1 votes

Give Dragon and Baron +80% attack speed

Make Blue Buff do burn damage to towers like red buff does to units, and make it worthwhile (40 true damage over 1.5 seconds for instance, non-stacking)

The map in Zaun would be very interesting!

To bring back Urf, they would have to change many champions resulting in almost making the whole game again

Dangerous Man1 votes

I would like one in Piltover because Jinx and Vi, that's all.

FastAsHeck1 votes

yeah they should make justice to urf. and while we are at it making it its own map etc, might as well make it permanent :D
