What is Randuin's Omen?

Like, is it a shield? A breastplate? A weird trinket of some sort? Some sort of backpack? I seriously look at that picture and just give up. I guess it's better than the old art (which always looked like a canteen to me) but I don't understand what that thing is SUPPOSED to be.
