Did Riot never really want to make a fantasy game?

Considering how many recent releases have been steampunk/science fiction champions. Plus turning Warwick and Gangplank into cyborgs. It almost feels like Rito never wanted to make a fantasy game with knights, archers, mages and such. Everything has been leaning more and more towards anime science fiction and steampunk.

We're getting a lot of scifi esque themes and ideas because we're currently in Piltover and Zaun's lore updates. We just had a bunch of fantasy/magic from the Shurima update.

Hextech and ''werewolfs'' are still fantasy. They may look technologic, but we will never have mix of magic and tech and transformation of humans to werewolfs.

Also, one of Riot's goals is diversity. But their ultimate goal is earning money. They want to adress LoL to any person. I personally like magic and dark themes, but some others may don't. Solution is adressing them too.

I am not quite sure what you are getting at.

League would be less interesting if it fit into one simple genre as far as design of champs goes. There would be less variety. The "fantasy" theme you mention generally entails a specific era of technology and a cliche of hero archetypes.

League however is not fantasy or scifi, it is a moba. You don't slay the dragon to get the quest completion and unlock the next stage, you don't fly your ship through the stars to meet aliens. You just break the nexus.

The genious about league lore is that it lets them do any champion they want. Want to make an over-the-top cartoony character? Make it a Yordle. Want to make a gritty character with guns? You can do that. Enhanced Werewolf? Check. Knight? Sure, why not. That combined with the art style means that root can literally take any concept and make it fit.

Think of Piltover/Zaun as similar to Dungeons and Dragon's Eberron campaign setting: magic is industrialized and commercialized for profit and efficiency. No, it's not classic medieval high fantasy, but things can be fantasy without being medieval high fantasy. Alchemical and psuedo-magical creatures have been a part of fantasy writing for ages (hello, Frankenstein) while not being strictly "medieval fantasy".

Yes, riot set out to create a fantasy game. No, they did not set out to create a purely dungeons-and-dragons esque medieval high fantasy game.
