The average size of trolls.

#Greetings fellow humanoids! Tristana

I was just wondering. What is the average size of a troll in the League of Legends universe? From Trundle's splash art we can see that his hand appears to be DOUBLE the size of a human (or what appears to be a human) and the human's shield seems to be around the size of one of his fingers. Does this mean that trolls are around the size of champions like Nautilus and Rek'sai, perhaps even as large as Cho'gath, or is Trundle a rare case of a giant troll? Trolls are one of my favourite races in mythology and Trundle is one of my favourite champions in the game so knowing if I'm a big bad brute or if I'm half the size of Garen's pauldrons would be very nice.

Haha ha no, Trolls wouldn't be that much taller then your average huma ... holy shit there's a guy crushed under his hand!!!

To be fair the narrative team of the time only gave themselves room to write four paragraphs of lore about Trolls and Trundle. That's honestly shameful considering his lore was during a story focused event designed to re-introduce his character! With this weird inconsistency I'm not surprised his species height is a new revelation to me.

However I'm going to remain skeptical about the size in the splash being accurate. Might be best to hope there's another Freljord event soon, one where his lore can be developed better.

Yeah. I'm honestly a little bit dissapointed about troll lore in the league of legends universe in general. The "introduction" of the Vastayan race was heralded with numerous different articles, with plenty of text explaining how they are ancient creatures with a lot of history with humans, while Trundle (and trolls in general) were just (re)introduced in order for Lissandra to have an "ally" in the war.

And while the thought of being a massive 30 foot brute is appealing to me, I do realize that he is supposed to be a troll, not a giant, so I agree, his splash art shouldn't reflect his actual height. And although I doubt another Freljord event will happen, a lot of (old) characters are getting short stories so I really hope they can get around to giving Trundle one aswell, even if it might take some time.

Now that i think about it, you're right

The Troll lore of League of Legends is very underwhelming

[zombie-nunu-bummed]

The only trolls we know about

  • the troll boy in Braum's lore
  • Tundle and his tribe
  • the Troll tribe in Ryze's lore

And that's all :v

There's also Warmog, the (former) wielder of Warmog's Armor. There's also a troll (Frost Troll) mentioned in Vayne's background.

Good job, i wasn't aware that Warmog was troll-related

I do remember the Troll in Vayne's lore, forgot to mention that (he dies fast and do not bring much lore)

Warlord Rhinark2 votes

Yeah, it seems like trolls are just used as generic villains for a lot of character backstories such as Ryze and Vayne. I can just imagine the board meeting.

Riot egemin: "Okay we need some villains for the updated backstories of Ryze and Vayne. Who should we pick?"

Everyone at Riot: "Trolls! Everyone hates trolls!"

#Brilliant.

I agree, they are the go-to bad guy in any standard RPG

I would like more depth about them too

To be fair the first two events were more gameplay event than a lore one. Frejord introduced the Aram map and Shurima introduced ascention

This would be useful information for a project I'm working on. Gonna keep an eye on this in case you get a response.

a project :p ?

THE BIG BROTHER2 votes

Working on an RPG campaign setting for League of Legends. I wanted to use trolls as a race, but if they're all as big as Trundle, I'm gonna have to modify things.

Warlord Rhinark1 votes

Sounds cool. Good luck with that.

Minions are Troll-Related

Even Jax could be Troll-related

So the size of Trolls can widly vary

(I can provide information if i'm not believed Zilean )

Minions are Troll-Related

This is taken from the League of Legends wiki:

"Minions are magical constructs summoned for battles. They are not fully sentient beings, they are controlled by summoners.

Summoning minions requires a constant and massive amount of magical energy. Nexuses focus magical energy from powerful crystals. This energy is enough for sustained minion spawning. The destruction of a nexus stops the summoning magic.

Minion bodies can be magically constructed from several sources, including animated magic scrolls, animated sand, magically animated bolts of cloth, and even sound.

Necromancy is a minion summoning technique that uses dark magic to reanimate Shepherd of Souls.png corpses. Most known practitioners of necromancy come from the Shadow Isles.

While not magically constructed, living minions share many traits with magically constructed minions. Voidborn summoned through Zz'Rot portals are controlled by those who have the magical power required to use them. One of such persons is Malzahar. A Celestial Being known as Bard is frequently followed by minion like spirits known as Meeps that aid him in his tasks (though they are more like companions than outright minions).

The earliest recorded use of minions for battles was at the battlefield known as Summoner's Rift, where summoners from ancient sides known as the Protectorate (Stag crest) and Magelord (Owl crest) fought against each other."

It is not stated that minions have anything to do with trolls anywhere.

Even Jax could be Troll-related

While at first this seemed plausible and I actually believed it for a while given the fact he has three fingers, you never see his face, and in his short story he calls himself a "monster", something that is almost a synonym for a troll (atleast humans think so), however, his feet does not match Trundle's and in his short story he reminisces about Icathia, a lost city located south on the continent of Valoran and he is even affiliated with Ionia on the official League of Legends website for some reason.

Even though Jax's race on the League of Legends wiki is listed as "Unknown (altered by the void)", I don't think he's a troll. Since trolls come from the Freljord, a place located to the north on the continent of Valoran, I doubt they can survive the temperatures of the south or even have a reason to travel down south to begin with.

And as far as I know, trolls don't see themselves as monsters based on one of Trundle's quotes: "I'm not ugly but they are about to be", meaning that trolls/he doesn't find himself/themselves disgusting/repulsing. I think it is more plausible that Jax is a human corrupted by void energies caused by Icathia, transforming him into what he is today. This would also explain why he calls himself a monster in his short story.

I know the League of Legends wiki is neither an official, nor a reliable source of information, but it's the biggest one we have (as far as I know). Correct me if any of the above statements are incorrect.

First of all, i appreciate that you made the efforts to write such a detailled answer [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

It is not stated that minions have anything to do with trolls anywhere.

Yep, because you used the wikia But don't worry i'll show you the truth https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/293500383769133056/343402672042278912/image.png "The minions of Summoner's Rift are descendants of a tribe of highly-intelligent trolls" ~Official Riot Q&A

I don't think he's a troll.

That's a personnal opinion and not facts, but yes i understand why you would think that

  • You already mentionned the three-fingers fact

  • About Icathia population, no one knows what kind of people used to live in there before the cataclysm. Trolls could have been there too. Humans are weaker thant Trolls, and humans are everywhere. There is no reason Trolls would exclusively stay in Freljord Trundle did the effort to travel to find a weapon, they are capable of it

  • "Since trolls come from the Freljord". You assumed based on only 1 troll population, but others areas could be viable for them, not just icy areas https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NZ1YIObpy-8/VyLXeigzdFI/AAAAAAAA6XQ/f7KmsY6Nhd8jwGcePa8HsxsgvA8_qyQ7wCLcB/s1600/Trundle_Splash_3.jpg

  • "I'm not ugly but they are about to be" That's a great quote you found there. Yes , Trundle find himself normal according to Troll Standard But anyone unwillingly corrupted by the void would find himselfy ugly, human or not. (If blue skin is a standard, then purple skin would feel ugly) _ _ I see you're interested in Lore and discussing it If you seek a place to discuss it , i would advice you Necrit's Discord channel It's a great place for Lore and theories

If you read the whole minion backstory, it was a joke. Literally an elaborate prank from Riot.

Warlord Rhinark2 votes

It was?

Necrozard2 votes

Actually yes and no

It was indeed a prank because they had no real lore for the minions at the time https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/293500383769133056/343468626768166922/image.png

But they want them to be more than just "magic-animated clothes"

Warlord Rhinark2 votes

Until they come up with a definite backstory (if they ever do), I'm going to assume that the whole troll thing is canon. For now atleast.

Necrozard2 votes

Yeah Me too, if they made the effort to write this, so detailled

It's because it's their "cannon placeholder" for now

Warlord Rhinark2 votes

First off: Thanks for the overall positive response. I really enjoy discussing lore and if people can be civil about it aswell then that is just fantastic.

Second off: I thank you for showing me the backstory of minions. Could you perhaps also provide a link to the official Q&A? I'd like to read the rest of it myself.

  • "Since trolls comes from the freljord You assumed based on only 1 troll population, but other areas could be viable for them, not just icy areas

Since the only trolls we hear about are the trolls in the Freljord, I simply thought trolls were only creatures that could be found in the Freljord. I was not aware that different populations of trolls exist. Also, has it ever been mentioned if (some) skins might be canon (in some way)? I just thought Traditional Trundle was a skin to remind people of his previous appearance rather than a hint that more troll populations exist in Runeterra other than just the trolls of the Freljord. I don't recall Riot ever saying that more than one race of troll exists but I might be wrong. If it was stated somewhere, could you perhaps provide a link?

  • About Icathia population, no one knows what kind of people used to live in there before the cataclysm. Trolls could have been there too. Humans are weaker thant Trolls, and humans are everywhere. There is no reason Trolls would exclusively stay in Freljord Trundle did the effort to travel to find a weapon, they are capable of it
  • As far as I know, it has never been stated where the trolls (Other than the trolls in the Freljord) lives, although I would assume they would live either within the Marshes of Kaladoun or the Kumungu Jungle, since in Trundle's old lore, trolls were quoted as: "creatures relegated to the murky recesses of the world" meaning they would probably live in areas such as those stated above, rather than being civilized enough to have an entire city full of them.

  • Also, humans (Again, as far as I know) are only weaker than trolls in terms of Strength and Regeneration. Humans are still more agile and more intelligent than trolls, which is probably why they could still spread so far and wide while trolls couldn't. It could also be attributed to the trolls' violent society, described as "barbaric and cannibalistic", meaning that trolls probably focused more on fighting (and eating) eachother, rather than expanding.

  • Yes, there is no definite reason for trolls to stay in the Freljord, but they also don't have a reason to leave it. Quite frankly I don't even think they want to leave. Trolls don't really seem to care about the outside world and seem to care a lot more about their home, the Freljord. It also seems like trolls believe themselves to be the rightful rulers of the Freljord, as suggested by Trundle's quote: "The Freljord is mine!". The reason for trolls not expanding could also be because trolls can't handle the temperature of southern lands, although this is just speculation and I have no evidence to back it up, other than trolls simply living in colder regions and as such would probably have adapted to that, rather than having adepted to the warmer regions such as Shurima or Icathia.

Thanks again for your response and thanks for sharing with me a place where I can discuss even more lore. I will be sure to check out Necrit's discord channel as soon as I can.

Necrozard2 votes

(Don't worry i read everything, but this ends all)

rather than being civilized enough to have an entire city full of them.

Yep that's a killer argument, there is no reason they would act this way Jax is rather civilized too.

Right now Necrit's discord is heavily heated by Ornn trailer We discovered he liked "delicious spicy cherries"

(The trailer in other languages do not bring the same information, it adds up and brings new information)
