"Riot is becoming too disney" Riot: "Okay, have this gruesome Freljord story. :) "

Damn that was such an awesome read, really makes one get invested in the new Freljord Lore.

Hell, I like Sejuani but I didn't think I'd ever grow attached to Udyr and Volibear.

But Riot did it:

These few passages are my absolute favorites!

"They were strange amalgamations of bears and other creatures, things of legends, dreams, and folklore. They had all been men once too, but now, so consumed by the true spirit, they had passed beyond what the normal animals looked like. The largest of them, a huge bear-like thing, lumbered out of the forest—where its head should have been, a decayed elk’s skull rested on a mane of black feathers. Eyes glowing with blue fire, it opened its jaws to reveal a child’s face inside its maw. Then the child opened its own mouth too, spewing a foul brown liquid. Other nightmares followed it from the woods, limping, crawling, and shambling forward."

"In the forest behind Najak, the great black-leaf trees cracked and shook. Taller than a mammoth, it stepped out of the woods. Walls of muscle, each limb larger than a man, propelled the beast forward. Its broken, ancient armor of dark, metal plates was caked brown by the dried gore of a hundreds of battles. Broken weapons, rusted with age, jutted from its back and shoulders. One half of its face had been stripped of flesh, revealing oily bone, teeth, and horns. From its mouth, an unnatural, black blood dripped. Its four eyes, impossibly ancient, alien, and pitiless, looked over Sejuani and Udyr." "Udyr climbed up the rubble of a stairway to a ruined square. Surrounded by tall stone buildings, he found the monster waiting for him. Alone and in the middle of the city, the bear spirit’s avatar impaled corpses on stakes arranged in some unknowable pattern. Black branches and roots grew from the speared bodies around the beast, like worms slowly crawling from the earth. The flesh and fur on the Volibear’s face had healed, it’s muscles seemed thicker, stronger than before. The Volibear’s eyes turned to Udyr as the shaman approached. Across its face, a dozen new eyes bloomed, each as dark and cold as a spider’s. Perhaps it smelled the foreign magic on the Winter’s Claw shaman, and now deemed him worthy of examination. Somehow Udyr knew, this time, it spoke to him alone. “I will be reborn. You cannot stop that, son of man,” the beast said."

"Udyr wasn’t afraid of the fight he would inevitably have with this creature. He wasn’t afraid of anything. His head was clear. And in this certainty… he knew those were bad signs. The Volibear would consume him as readily as Sejuani. But his resolve did not falter. He had sworn an oath to protect Sejuani, as a father would. No matter the cost. “You will not take her,” Udyr spat. Silence was the only answer the beast gave as it turned back to its gruesome task."

Thank you so much. Glad you liked it! It's funny, each of the projects I do I tend to put in different mental buckets based on various musical tastes. I literally think, this character to should appeal to people who like "this or that genre of music." Rakan, Kled, Zoe, Aatrox, and Volibear each relate to different types of music.

It's possible Volibear is the most "metal" thing I've ever written-- even more than Aatrox's short story.

Weird cthuloid monstrosity you need to put down by kicking its ass with some well placed fisticuffs?

I’m in.

As an old fan of these 3 characters i have no complaints.Sejuani is clever, fearsome, brutal yet cares for her people! Udyr is full of mysteries and and one of the most interesting beings in Freljord. and Voli is... oh man i could feel my heartbeat rising when he showed up!

If i only knew Odin was cooking up this masterpiece all along, i would never lose my patience for Sejuani's lore update! It was captivating, intense and brutal! i liked the comics but they had nothing on this (personal opinion ofc). Odin deserves high praises!

i have to say the way Sejuani Udyr and Voli were portrayed in this story, it made waiting all these years worth it! so much information packed into one story!

What a great story and great insight into Freljord! Odin is so amazing and whole Discord loved it aswell :) It just shows how scary Freljord truly is and that Volibear is not cuddly and cute but quite the opposite! I do wonder, it seems as tho Volibear and Ornn had a huge fight and it made them spirits? They crushed each other... And it would be great to know where the Black Forest is and what makes it so dark! Anyways great post MM

I'm not trying to join on the I hate change bandwagon, but I'm struggling to understand why they changed Volibear into this.

They made Udyr into something I actually like and want to know more about. He seems older, more composed, more intelligent. I love it. And Volibear is terrifying and clearly very powerful, which makes me want to know more about the confrontation between him and Ornn.

This makes me really excited for a Volibear VGU. Imagine a giant hulking wall of flesh who gets bigger with every Jungle Camp and champion he kills, until he barely even resembles a bear anymore and looks more like a horrifying glob of flesh strung together with chains of electricity. He would absolutely be one of the scariest characters ever and this story has me so hyped up for what they do with him soon. This story implies that his design is probably already finish/set in stone, so I wouldn't be surprised if he was the next major VGU after Morde.

Malicious, can you please tell me there's more Kayle lore on the way? If today's bios is all there is then they dropped the ball super hard and just made Kayle cartoonishly evil.

But it's weird that there's no color story at all, and that they revealed their kits but not their VOs. That's it, I choose to believe they're pulling a Viktor on us.

A no from me.

What use in approaching a climax or gruesome detail when theres no emotional context, no established personal philosophies? The description of the setting feels mashed as well.

Does it matter what happens to a character or how they've changed when we cant see inside those characters witness it ourselves?

I don't want silly gore discriptions Riot. I want the full dark, R rated progressive collapse of volibears sanity as a man at the most personal level.

Or whatever...

Absolutely phenominal read.

Although, as someone who is quite attatched to current Voli, I'm a tad bit sad to see such a drastic change in the champion's theme. I'm not against league incorporating darker elements into it's story, but I do wish that our bear didn't have to die in the process. I would've loved to have seen a new champion take on the role of corrupted avatar of darkness.

The worst part about is that Volibear is not a popular champion by any means. If this were a more popular character like Ahri, I doubt riot would feel quite as inclined to make such a drastic 180 with the character. There simply won't be enough people speaking up about the change to convince Riot to make a change that stays more faithful to the character's original story.

Even some of the more criticized reworks, like Galio and Kayle at least keep a good part of what made the champion what they were. Galio is still, at his core, a guardian. Kayle is still an embodiment of righteousness and justice.

Previous Voli was a positive figure. He was a wise leader of his people. This version of Volibear shares nothing with his previous incarnation other than a name. He's a savage, almost cartoonishly brutal boogyman of sorts. He's the monster you warn your children about to convince them not to wonder out alone at night.

Again, nothing against the concept. It's a genuinely cool story, but why use Volibear to fill this role? Why not a new champion all together? All I can ask of Riot is that, if you do decide to rework Voli, try to keep the rework more faithful to what he is now. If Voli is going to be a more antagonistic figure, then I'd rather see him as an antagonist with his own set of values for what he wants the freijord to be.

This has been one Volibear main's rant.
