Hey Reav3, now that evelynn has been revealed, there's one small thing we need to talk about.
Hi Reav3, hope you are having a nice day.
Since evelynn's rework is out there's something we've gotta talk about. I saw this coming with Poppy's rework, but Evelynn's rework kind of makes this an official discussion to be had. We don't have a truly situational builder anymore. We don't have someone who could go either AP, AD, or tank. I know you are a strong theme/lore guy and I get that you had to change certain champs, but I'd like to argue that gameplay is important too. Now it seems like one style of champion has been completely deleted from the game and there are those of us (like junglers) who kind of want or need that flexibility.
Do you have any idea how rough it is to be the first pick as a jungler? The jungler at best is the guy who fills the team's comp but if you are first pick, you've got no idea if the 4 people on your team are going to pick around you. There's been times I've first picked shyvana only to had someone complain later that the jungler didn't pick anyone with CC. 4 people picked after I did and I was the one to get blamed.
At the very least, a jungler with viable AP, AD, and tank paths would be a great tool for when I don't know what the monkeys on my team are going to do. This also would help with mastery of a single champ as a jungler. Right now you need to know 2-3 tanks, 2-3 carries/assassins, 2-3 bruisers, and 2-3 ap champs to do your job. In high elo you also need to know 1-3 early game junglers as well. That's a lot of champs you need to know when most other roles you can get by with maining 1 champ and have 1-2 backups.
I mean yeah you can one trick as a jungler, but in doing so you will be hurting your team a lot of the time. The jungler is supposed to be the team's handyman and it's hard to be handy as an out-of-meta one trick.
There's another aspect we need to talk about as well: personal expression. Having a champ that can be build with either AP, AD, or tank means I as a player can express myself in a way that other characters don't really allow people. Champs nowadays pretty much do one thing. For the most part that's a good thing, but as I was hinting above, that can also be bad. Like when you have to herd cats and carry them. What was great about the old poppy and evelynn (not that they were without issues) is that if you had the opportunity to express yourself on a single champ you could, and if you had pressing needs in another direction, that was okay too.
I'd argue there's a big difference than expressing oneself by picking various characters and having a single champ who can act as a blank slate. In the first case, you are a X main, with all the good
and bad
that goes with it. In the second case you are either a team player or a free spirit, depending on the circumstance. But at least you have the opportunity to make the call after the dust of champ select has settled.
Now a lot of people might argue, just learn 10 more champs to mastery. To them I'd say that takes a lot of time. There's a good reason I'm never going to pick up lee sin. There's also the issue were no matter how I try, I just can't get a specific champ well enough to play him. Sometimes no matter how hard we try, specific champs just won't mesh with us. There's a few ARAM champs I dread because of this. Having a fallback champ I can make fit role X would certainly be a lot easier for me as a player when the meta shifts, or I have to first pick, or or I realize my team needs X sometime into the game because the guy who was doing that is feeding/inting/afk/tilted/yelling at the jungler or support/etc.
Does this mean I'm asking for some kind of jack of all trades, master of none? Maybe. I think there are valid cases when that's acceptable. At some point gameplay needs to trump story/flavor no matter how much it hurts. I mean any good editor worth his salt will tell you to use said or asked when a character is talking 99% of the time. To put it another way, no matter what kind of house you are building, you need a good solid foundation. That's what I want, a champ who's a solid basic foundation that any style of house can go on. Some of us want something that is good enough at several things if we build it that way rather than very strong at something the monkeys won't pick around or don't have a pool deep enough to pick around if they wanted to.
Does this mean there could be a narrative or cohesiveness hit? Sure, but since league is a game I think there are plenty of players, we'll call them Spike "Midrange" Vorthos, who would rather have a functional general tool without a story that can be used in a lot of occasions rather than a specific tool with a story that is useless to their current needs. Specific tools are side-board cards unless you've got a combo deck going. You guys, for whatever reason, got rid of a tool that some players could really use. I'm asking for that tool to be put back in the game in some form. If you can add a theme or narrative purpose for it, that's great. But it's not what some players would want or need. Some of us need a canvas that we can do the painting on during a game.
If league really is about a champ for everyone like that one youtube commercial says it is, then I'd really urge you guys to add 1-2 handymen champs back into the game. Some of us would like to see that.
Thanks, and have a nice day.
