Is Ivern the same "race" as Maokai?

What with the magics and the forrest? Does that mean we'll be seeing more of them later on? I think it would be cool to have a new faction created, honestly.

They could definetly both be nature spirits, though any clarification about what Ivern actually is has yet to be revealed. I suppose it depends on how spirits conduct themselves in the League universe and how Ivern fits in to that.

A faction for spirits is highly unlikely. I feel like factions are irrelevant when discussing Ivern anyway considering how specific they are. Ivern likely doesn't belong to any particular nation and probably holds no affiliation to anything other than life and nature.

Probably not. I mean, Ivern probably isn't Oak.

What? You'll didn't know Maokai is an anagram for "I am Oak"?

He seems like some spirit sort of creature. But yeah, Maokai is a spirit (as well as Kindred, Bard, Skaarl and possibly Anivia), and they both seem to have taken the form of a treant.

He seems like the more lively, uncorrupted and possibly wiser (yet not innocent) counterpart of Maokai. We'll have to wait for his VO and lore to really see, though, I guess. :P

I love him already regardless. :>

Riot has eluded to other natural spirits in the past with Maokai's old lore but I wouldn't be so quick to attach the two spirits together. One has much more of a humanoid figure to him, and one has more of a tree-like look to him. Definitely don't think they are family. To better explain it, Ivern looks like a human turned into a tree, Maokai just looks like a tree became alive. Also, Maokai seems to get upset when any form of life whether it be trees or animals that are being harmed, Ivern seems to mostly care about these animals and less about nature itself. That's my take at least.

Ok so, apparently I'm really psyched by this champ cause I think I figured out a couple more things about him. On his "gauntlet" there appears to be either the image of or the growth of the Amanita muscaria. This is a type of psychotropic mushroom, an entheogen (Fully matured, it looks just like the ones in Mario Bros., red cap white dots "warts"). An entheogen is any chemical substance used in a religious, shamanic, or spiritual context to induce a transcendent state. In western Siberia its use was restricted to the shamans. This held true for the sorcerers of the Sami people in Inari, Finland as well reportedly some Native American tribes of the Sub-Arctic. (Vikings were also known to consume it before battle and go into a berserker rage. Apparently the consumption of 15 meant death. So where am I going with all this?...

  • Shaman Treant
  • Possibly one entheogen ability (Maybe something like Teemo's Toxic Shock?)
  • Ult does 100% damage at Lvl 15
  • Riot artists love Mario Bros.
  • This guy might just be pretty bad a**

Well, that's all I got for now. See ya in the Rift! GGHF

it's possbile, those who read maokai's new lore know he was a nature spirit on the blessed isles that now lives semi corrupted trying to reverse the damage of the ruination.

you could argue if nature spirits existed on the blessed isles they could exist in other places.

I thought Maokai was cursed into being a Treant.

This guy seems to be a natural Treant.

Hige9/14/2016, 11:14:02 PM1 votes

Considering that Maokai was a Tree magically brought to life on the shadow isles and that Ivern seems to live in some sort of jungle, I'd say they are very different species of tree :P not to mention that they were brought to life by different methods... possibly.

Ivern: Friend of the Forest...

He definitely seems to be a treant and judging by the "gauntlet" on his left arm, possibly of Maokai's lineage. I must say, he's quite breath-takingly majestic and seems to be more of a shaman than Maokai. From the video it seems his abilities may include something similar to Zyra's Grasping Roots (soldier being strangled by roots) and possibly also her Stranglethorns (at the end of the video he seems to summon the growth of the brush at will). I also believe he will be capable of granting buffs to monster camps as he looks to be protecting the cubs of a murk wolf. Waiting with bated breath for this one. On another note, it would be FANTASTIC if he and Mao had boss interactions (voice as well as gameplay) when played either on the same team or 1v1. Riot....please? Maokai

I can't wait to hear his full lore. So far we can confirm that Ivern & Maokai are both treants, but they became treants in opposite ways. Maokai was once a peaceful nature spirit who escaped the cataclysm by animating a great tree, and is now a creature of rage and vengance. Ivern was once a cruel (man?) who was transformed by a great tree and is now a loving protector of forest creatures.

The Tolkien geek in me sees them very much as Tom Bombadil (Ivern) and Old Man Willow (Maokai). :)

Species is a better word, just saying.

OurLestrade9/14/2016, 8:29:31 PM1 votes

Doubt it.

Mordepool9/14/2016, 8:34:29 PM1 votes

Forest spirit. Could be just different geographical locations. Or te same who knows we dont have a map

Weathered9/14/2016, 9:09:00 PM1 votes

Most likely not. Maokai is part of the shadow isles.

If you can even call natural spirits as a race....then yes, kinda. It doesnt work the same as it does with directly organic beings. There is no such thing as a Race when you are a spirit.
