We all snug and comfy in our new home on the Story & Art board? Perfect! Welcome to this week's iteration of Lore Discussion, the weekly investigation into some of League's most hard-hitting mysteries and cases! From last week's venture into the mystical mysteries of inner Ionia turmoil, we move to the High-Tech Highrise of Piltover (My personal favorite nation) for one of League's oldest mysteries:

http://i.imgur.com/tTnQzQZ.jpg #Who is C?

In Caitlyn's lore, she's known as the best detective and sheriff around who's never lost a perp or missed a shot...except for one enigmatic person known only by his calling card "C". The only thing that is for sure about C is that his-or-her heists are some of the most legendary stunts Valoran has ever seen. No country or nation is safe from his-or-her thieving hands. The big question has been unanswered and without hint to this day, which is why we're going to be digging into it thanks to the high volume of request! So who could C possibly be?

#Suspect: Twisted Fate http://i.imgur.com/rEvbL27.jpg

One of the more popular theories on who C is centers around Twisted Fate. A con-man turned magic-man ("EAT IT" magical calligraphy not included), Twisted Fate is already a high profile suspect due to his shady past and cheating, thieving ways. However, there are a few more things that point toward Fate being a probably suspect:

  • We don't know Twisted Fate's real name. It's quite possible that the "C" left as a calling card could in fact be Twisted Fate's real name or even last name. Although Chester "Twisted Fate" Chongo doesn't have the same mysterious ring to it as Twisted Fate itself.

  • At every attempt, Caitlyn was unable to trap or corner C. While this could mean C was just THAT good, it could also be the interference of "magic" that Caitlyn hasn't dealt with before. More importantly, a magical con-man with the ability to teleport great distances in a fraction of a second? Hmmmm....

  • Twisted Fate's current origins and whereabouts are unknown, meaning he lacks little alibi when it comes to pinning him on these crimes. More importantly, Fate is already well-versed with crime, which means any more theviery is just another bullet point on his already impressive..."resume".

The only big mark I'd say this theory has is that Twisted Fate is cocky and a bit of a showboat. It doesn't match that he'd leave a calling card under a new name instead of just outright saying "Yes it was me all along!". All things considered, this is a small poke in the theory that does little to deflate it. Fate has a big history of crime and this could just be another notch in the belt.

#Suspect: Caitlyn http://i.imgur.com/Hd8tjE4.jpg

What? Piltover's shining citizen and beacon of justice herself?!? Yes, Caitlyn is indeed under scrutiny herself thanks to some rumors and theories surrounding the sheriff in her own home. Instead of just listing examples why, let me present the theory itself: Caitlyn, in her skill, has pretty much captured every major criminal up to this point save for two: Jinx, the mad terrorist that's blowing Piltover to pieces, and C, the enigmatic thief. Yet we haven't heard hair about C in all his or her glory for...well, ages. The implication is that C is, in fact, Caitlyn, and the appearance of a worthy opponent to her crime-busting ways has suppressed the alternate ego that was C. Key points to this theory include:

  • C is a subconscious/unknown part of Caitlyn's personality. She is unaware that C exists in her, she just does these crimes in her unknowing state and is then left with little-to-no evidence.

  • This clears up the notion that C is magically uncatchable: Caitlyn's mind shuts out that she is doing this, making her frustrated about a criminal she cannot attain when (in fact) she cannot catch C simply because C does not exist in a physical form. C is a concept, a foe that Caitlyn herself made.

  • Again, this shows why there's no odd examples of C's targets reappearing. If C stole a master painting, wouldn't it turn up on the black market or in some rich mafioso's home? If it was Caitlyn doing this, she keeps her "prizes" as C hidden and unknown to even herself, a cache worth trillions of Piltover Bucks (What even IS Runeterra's currency?) that not a single living being knows about.

The obvious hole in this theory is "How did Caitlyn get to these places", which again can be explained. Outside of the first heist in Demacia, Caitlyn would arrive at every city following a lead on C. During this time, the unconscious trigger in her mind swaps her personality and mentality with the "C" character. At this point C commits whatever crime they wish as Caitlyn, nobody thinking otherwise of her behavior as she's a sheriff. C gets what she wants, hides it, returns to Caitlyn's temporary residence only to wake up a few hours later that C has struck again...

As with any theory, we also have to look into the idea that this could be someone Riot has in the pipeline for a champion but has yet to reveal. As for me, however, I've actually extensively used C in stories and champion concepts of my own design. None of this I'll bore you with, but suffice to say I have enormous plans for the "C" character if I can ever get into Riot and get my filthy, grubby mits on the Lore.

All that aside, who else COULD C be? Let's look at some possibilities:

  • Someone part of Vi's old gang. Vi, in her story, was originally part of a less-than-reputable group who committed crimes all the time. It's entirely possible Vi knows who C is, she just doesn't want to rat out whoever it might be due to a code of honor or otherwise.

  • Personally, I feel like Zaun is worth investigating in this regard. A city full of backstabbing, lax laws and criminals without end? I bet you'd be hard pressed NOT to find someone who doesn't like to swipe something.

  • Perhaps a jealous rival of Caitlyn who used to work with her but got put out of business when Piltover's crime when to about 0%. Out of a job, they turn to crime. Knowing all of Caitlyn's tricks also makes it quite easy for him/her to strike, get out and leave just the right amount of "clues" to infuriate Caitlyn and cover their tracks.

At the end of the day, part of me hopes that the C mystery is never solved. As someone who has used it, I think the idea of a nameless criminal who thwarts Caitlyn at every turn is an incredible plot point and a great place for people who like making concepts or writing stories to start. It's where I did. Either way, what do you all think? Is C a case of multiple personality? A rogue cardslinger? Someone who we'd never suspect? And remember to vote on next week's discussion!

Could also possibly be an exiled Ionian. Possibly a young selfish prodigy that can perform ninja techniques with ease.

I think C can be related to Vi's name, which is VI, the roman numeral for "6". Maybe, Vi used to be part of the gang, C could belong to, or lead. Being the leader Vi could not even know C.

Aditionally, when Jinx was first teased, she signed Vi's page with an "X" graffiti. Maybe the 3 of them could be related that way, and heck! it could even explain the liberal concept of the still vague sisters of Vi and Jinx. Maybe the gang is a sisterhood of some sort.

If this were a movie, Twisted Fate would probably someone Caitlyn would turn to for help, to possibly understand how C thinks.

Looks like Vi, Jinx and C has something in common, being criminal and Roman numerals

VI in Roman is 6

Jinx (X) is 10

L is 50 (Death Note)

C is 100

D is 500

M is 1000

To be honest, Twisted Fate is less versed in crime and more versed in gambling. He definitely could be this "C" dude, or could be completely separate from C.

I think C is definitely a character that we don't know of yet outside of Catilyn's interactions with him/her.

Imagine how weird it would be if "C" actually got released as a hero, and was officially named "C".

What if C is Twitch?

It seems comical, yes, but he does seem to fit the ticket quite well: he has invisibility, is apparently pretty greedy, is a Zaunite...

It could just be everyone's favorite Plague Rat taking things he's only vaguely aware matter.
