When Kayn came out everyone who knew that old theory was already applying it to Varus. It was expected, and the fans of the old lore were waiting for an expansion to the story of Varus.
Don't make assumptions about the past unless you do your research first, and don't you dare sweep legitimate criticisms under the "homophobe" rug.
It was widely thought that Varus would still be Varus, just using a Darkin bow. Not...what this lore has turned into.
When he was first retconned to have the weapon he a Darkin people flocked in Support because it answered some background questions.
Are you joking? There was a ton of negative feedback on the forums and reddit when the short-form was accidentally pushed to the PBE to the point where Reds were posting all over the place that everyone needed to just wait to see the full lore.
Calling Varus' bow a Darkin doesn't change who he is as a person, just like calling Nami a vastaya doesn't change who she is as a person. This is like if you made the real Nami a parasitic barnacle that controls a fish that was conjoined onto a person by a mad scientist and she's seeking the moon pearl to turn back into a real human.
