Are Brackern related to the Black Mist?

So I was digging through Maokai's voicelines.

Surprisingly, he had a voiceline towards Jayce, and even more surprising, it reveals something strange:

"A voice follows this one! A song, like those in the Mist!"

A voice? A song?

Immediately I thought of the Hextech Crystal inside of Jayce's Mercury Hammer, a crystal that once belonged to the Brackern.

But, why is the Brackern's song like those in the Mist?

Could the Brackern somehow be related to the Black Mist?

isn't it because they're killed when you take their crystals

It's a reference to how Jayce hears "singing" from within the crystal. The crystals are supposed to house the living memories of the Brackern, so multiple voices would be singing to Jayce at any given time.

He is just comparing the singing of the Brackern to the "singing" of the spirits in the Black Mist

It's a loose comparison, not meant to suggest they are in any way connected though
