I feel like Kai'Sa was a bit of a wasted opportunity.
I'm all for sex appeal in video games but I feel like Kai'Sa wasted the opportunity that a sexy humanoid female from the void offered. Why's that, you might be asking.
Well Timmy, let me tell you.
When we think of the void and its creatures, what do we think of? We think of an empty place filled with hungry creatures. Either traditionally hungry like
,
, or
or we think of nontraditional forms of hunger like
. So what is a traditional form of hunger that you might naturally equate with an attractive female?
Sexual hunger.

Riot's sexy void female should have been evelynn. If you think about it, either the old evelynn or the new one could have been made to work as a void creature that functions as a sex-hungry predator. It would have also worked as a functional backstory that a lot of people wanted for her without messing with her. I really feel like if riot wanted a sexy female from the void, and I'm fine with that, they really should have all in-ed on the idea with what we know about the void instead of this dart-board character design that they are offering. So Kai'Sa represents a failed opportunity, but this is going to have a compounded damage when she goes live: you won't be able to make a champion who can better explore these ideas because now Kai'Sa exists and to make that other champ, you'd have to do a large rework of at least the lore on Kai'Sa... you might even have to wait until a VGU 5 years from now and then completely change her character and piss off all her fans in the process. I'm not saying that doesn't happen at Riot, but it's something that needs to be avoided.
The bigger issue is that this is the second time in the past year or so when riot messed up by putting an idea into a rework/new champ into the wrong character.
's gay lore really should have been put onto
because mechanically speaking, Kayne would have much better been able carry out the idea of two people being merged into a single form while trying to fight off a darkin that's possessing them.
So basically I feel like riot is missing out on opportunities for better character exploration and development because it seems like they are taking themes one champ could explore better and putting them onto the wrong one. Thematically Evelynn would have better been able to explore a sexy void female. Thematically and mechanically, Kayne would have better support 2 gay lovers in one body fighting a darkin.
If rito was just cranking champs out like in season 1 I wouldn't have complained so much because any lost opportunities could have been more easily replaced by whichever champ is coming out in 2 weeks time. However we are getting so few new champs and reworks these days I really feel like riot can't waste opportunities, much less waste multiple opportunities in a calendar year.
Reav3, if you are happening to read this thread (and I don't blame you if you didn't) you can't waste opportunities. You just don't have the volume of champs being made or reworked to afford these kinds of mistakes. I really think you guys need to roadmap better and reign in ideas. If you have a champ in the works that'll better support some idea, you might have to be willing to shift it over. If you have to stop work halfway in the process and adapt a champ who will better support an idea that is in the pipeline, then you better stop work halfway in the process. If you have to stop a lore update because there's a champ being worked on who'd better explore that kind of theme or idea, then let the old champ have a sucky lore for just a little longer. It's not like it's going anywhere.
Reav3, if you've got a list of champion ideas you need to explore they better be written down somewhere that everyone on the new champ, rework, and lore teams can see and interact with and the people working under you need to have the balls to say "Hold on Team B, I think this thing I'm working on now might be a better champion for your idea than yours."
