Why Varus?

So, I have no real issues with any of Varus's new lore or the attention he's all of a sudden receiving from the story department, but I'm just wondering why specifically Varus? Don't get me wrong, I like him, but he's been one of the more obscure champions for as long as I've been playing League, at least until season 7 brought him out into the spotlight, so it seems odd that all of the narrative attention would be thrust onto him. It makes me think something big is about to happen with the Darkin.

I'm pretty sure it's precisely because he was such a vague, underutilized character that they decided to go with him. If you simply look at the splash of new varus he looks fuckn sick. Easily of a magnitude 100x better than the ugly shit's current splash as well as in-game model.

i think you're completely right that Darkin is a huge focus right now, and in the future. It's absolutely the most underutilized force in league right now. Luckily, with the release and excitement over Kayn, and the looming Aatrox rework (third in line after Swain and Irelia: https://support.riotgames.com/hc/en-us/articles/202294884-Champion-Update-Schedule) we'll be in store for some truly breathtaking Darkin creative.

They are about to relaunch Morgana and Kayle and they need the other Darkin in order for their lore to make sense.
