So technically summoners are separate from Runeterra...

But are champions aware that beings from another dimension are summoning them from across space and time to fight?

Or is this just sort of "Hey I wonder why I'm in a river now"

Neither, IoW not canon anymore, no explanation on why they are fighting.

Every time I have seen this happen in which story is disconnected from play things turn out for the worse. People no longer feel like they are important. I mean some of us get sucked into what they are playing and with this you just don't get that same feeling.

It's really awkward if it happens while they're changing or something. Poor Vlad gets summoned in with his ridiculous cape halfway on, draped over his head like "AH DAMMIT NOT AGAIN"

This. Riot seems to think its game is going to better better off without giving us a reason why each game is important.

They seem to want to make their game into some kind of arena simulator, where we see how each battle plays out in a "what if" situation. No emotional investment needed outside of "I wanna win this one".

They'll still have some semblance of lore....but it won't be tied directly to the game.

The game will reflect the lore, the champions in the game are directly from the lore, but the lore won't reflect the game, there is no reason why the champions are in our game. This means the lore department is no longer forced to write lore with the game in mind. Also means there is no immersion left whatsoever.
