Lemme guess: Nami's story was too hard to work with, and you simply could not create any sort of Diana/Nami story that wouldn't be super-contrived.

Vastayan just describes a species of humanoid animals. Marai could still well be a clan, type etc of Vastayan.
The Marai haven't gone anywhere.
EDIT: Just an extra tidbit - there are many named vastaya tribes.
It's most likely that the Marai are a type of Vastayan, as the Vastaya are said to be more like a "phylum" rather than a very specific species. AS seen in Eduard's studies, they can range from talking otter-fish-seal people, transforming were-pigs and sexy Foxes and Birds, and it's said that each Vastayans are split up in extremely distinct clans and cultures.

Vastaya is a vast taxonomy for all bipedal chimeric sentient shapeshifting beings residing on Runeterra. It is also used as a name for some individual races within the taxonomy.
I don't see how her being Vastayan changes Nami's story. It's more like an added detail that her & the Marai are Vastayan.

I was kind of hoping she wouldn't be a vastaya but w/e, not a big deal. Doesn't mean she can't have any connection to Diana, her story doesn't necessarily have to be isolated from other regions and their champions.
Not necessarily, Vastaya is a term that can include a huge variety of different species. Marai can still be a thing even though they are Vastayan as well.
