Since Varus' story has been rewritten, I'd love for there to be a Dark Knight Champion

I've always had an interest in the "Dark Knight" archetype ever since Final Fantasy 4: a noble character who takes on a dark power to protect others, but may damn themselves in the process. Varus used to do this, though not for noble reasons (he just wanted revenge), and now he's all Darkin stuff. As for Kassadin, his lore is too old, so I say he doesn't count.

To that end, I'd absolutely love it if we had a new Champion, preferably a Demacian, who ends up filling the Dark Knight niche. The whole "Dark Is Not Evil" thing would be a really nice theme to explore.

That's the kind of thinking that gets lore completely nuked from orbit and replaced with something totally different ( Varus )

I think Garen, Taric and Jarvan all incorporate some traits of the classic paladin, if there was another paladin champ Riot should try to avoid overlapping with these :)

Garen and Jarvan are more on the Warrior side even if they use some kind of magic in their attacks. Taric is indeed a Paladin but not on the dps side, that would be more Kayle (of who I can't wait the VGU). I won't fear much the overlaps as we already have 2 fire mages 2 frost mages and I'm sure I'm missing other really close characters.

I think to qualify as this trope, the character needs to consciously choose to take on this damning power. Yorick did not get a choice: his options were to become the champion he is today, or to become another lost soul in the mist. The Maiden does tempt him to let go of his mortality, and Yorick's determination and resolve is certainly a big part of his character, but he still never had the option to say "not my problem" and turn his back on the conflict he's stuck in.

I'd love a shadow mage that seems super dark and evil, but is really bent on using his powers to protect others, so that he doesn't succumb to some kind of curse.

I'm imagining huge barriers forged from a black sphere, long shadow whips that keep enemies at bay or pull allies closer. Not exactly dark knight themed, but a misunderstood "dark" champion no less.

Completely nuke Varus from the game as a character, give him a completely different story, and then introduce a new champ with basically Varus' story. That is so dumb, I wouldn't put it past the lore team.

Except Varus originally didn't take the dark power to protect people. He took it to get revenge.
