lets get something right: loot boxes are gambling boxes. whether you pay for them or earn them within the period that they're earnable you're still gambling for what you get. this doesn't pertain to just the lootboxes though, its the other "event" items. as a kog'maw main/one trick/enthusiast i, naturally, only play kog'maw. so my only way to get boxes, therefore purple crystals, is to play champions i'm not good with and do well OR buy chests in hopes of getting the crystals. it's actually funny how Youtube content creators title the skin "New 300$ skin" or "500$ Kog'Maw" skin instead of something like "legendary skin you have to grind for". it's evident that it is something you have to gamble to get and has nothing to do with playing the game

They’re a grind sink if you wanna grind for them, I don’t think the loot box exlusitiviety is big enough to be any sort of problem

I already stated it in another thread: you are already able to get these skins without paying a single cent. You just have to be willing to invest time in it.

I got 4 gemstones this season without buying a single chest, just from the free champion chests. Yes, it took the whole season for 4 gemstones, but this means it is still possible.

Honestly, I don't understand this gambling stuff... what's next? People claiming that Kinder eggs are gambling?

Fun fact: Several US States and a number of countries in the EU are strongly considering classifying Loot Boxes as gambling (aimed at minors no less!) If anything comes of that, expect purchasable loot boxes to vanish forever. Would probably radically change how we acquire them, too.
