We need to stop saying "x champ doesn't fit x skin"

I'm getting a little bit frustrated on how the community portrays skin lines.

They're suppose to show an alternate version of the champ.

"What if this champ was a star Guardian?"

"What if this champ was a battle boss?" Etc

If riot made skins based on the champ we would have never gotten Lollipoppy. We would have never gotten Pentakill and Dj Sona. We would have never gotten Gatekeeper Gallo. We need to stop saying that statement because it's just an absolutely rubbish argument.

I also dislike the mentality of "I don't like it so it shouldn't exist". Sorry but no skin is going to please everyone and I kind of like how every player has a chance of getting a skin that's right for them. This goes for game modes as well. Don't like it? Don't play.

I initially went on the boards because I just found out about the SG hype (and also was hoping I could find a place to beg people bc I'm so broke but shhh that's a side quest) and instead this negativity is just raining on my dazzle. I initially really wanted SG Ezreal too but everyone says he's ugly and I shouldn't let myself be influenced but bc money is money it makes me question myself.

And I'm super in love with SG Ahri so for the apparently few? people on here that share this opinion, all this lash about it is really upsetting.

If you find SG Ezreal appealing to you, you should get it. Why should the community tell you how to spend your money? No skin pleases everyone. I myself like the idea of SG Ahri but if Riot wanted to make it legendary, I understand if they would wait longer because she did just get Arcade. Bottom line is even if everyone hates a skin, it is your money and if you like that skin you should get it. Haters gonna hate.

I also recommend looking at Strategy Zero's skin reviews, they are very well done and I am sure they will do the SG skins as soon as possible after they go live.

Three cheers for Zeanix, who pointed out the truth of skins! We wouldn't have Giant Enemy Crabgot if every skin had to be a war machine like Urgot. We wouldn't have Star Guardian Jinx or Star Guardian Ezreal, much as I hate to say that last one.

I actually wish they'd make more skins that "don't fit". PugMaw and Renektoy were some good examples. Just random skins that don't really have anything to do with the champ but are still cool. Smite does this a lot, one of Odin's skins turns him into a giant panda. Wtf do Odin and pandas have in common? Nothing, but the skin is still badass.

To be fair, some have more reason than others. And others make a fair point.

Say what you want, but Yorick has gotten a skin since... when? And Ahri isn't exactly starving for skins. The backlash may be exaggerated, but it's not without a cause.

To be fair, Yorick didn't get any skins because he was a terrible champion design intentionally kept hidden under the rug until they could rework him. Why would they encourage you playing a champion they don't want you to play? He wasn't even on the free rotation. Now that he's reworked he's gonna get a skin within this year, along with a bunch of other champions that haven't gotten a skin in forever. The real surprise is why Viktor didn't get a skin last year, he had a 15% pick rate and was super strong. Now he's down to 3% and is pretty mediocre, so not as many people are gonna buy it.

Sona actually does fit both Pentakill and Dj sona and to explain why lemme copy you my comment in another post :

im not saying these skins shouldnt exist, they should just pointing out that not everyone is going to like them so we are going to see negative responses like that. i dont like soraka program skin so didnt buy it simple as that.

my point is , community voicing out their negative feedback isnt a nuisance.its just a ways for developers to learn what their players like AND dislike.how they decide to approach that is up to them. and sadly in this case riot decided to keep silent about it if they make one post and explain why they want skins that are appealing to everyone and why they picked the champions they did.it put a lot of players at ease and gives everyone a good idea for future expectations.

I agree it's a different opinion of the skin. Reading your view on Sona, and it's clear that we definitely have a different view on her. With the miss fortune though, itsnt that the point though? I mean she's still actually badass with star Guardian, but with a little more bright stars. You can say to any champion. Why does Nami have a dark skin, or Vayne a soul hunter. Idk it's kinda weird statement for that.

On the comment on the community voicing it, I know people want x skin on x champ, and Riot is silent about it. But isn't that also the point? It's like spoiling a movie, if you know it then once the point? It's like those annoying leaks, when they become true, it's like ah well that's happening. I'm glad they didn't leak the actual events, like the Nigh and Dawn bringer events. That got me hyped again for the skins.

what i said about Riot keeping silent, i mean like if they see people dont like the ideas of "out of character" skins,i think the community will be more accepting if they come out and explain that they want everyone to be happy and they rather have options for all the players who want to see their fav characters in different theme rather than restricting it to the original characteristic even if its not the same kind of personality.

you and me can say that all day long but unless we hear these words from Riot perspective and they explaining why they picked X and Y character for this skinline and not Z character (after the reveal and release of course) community would be much less hostile toward their choices.

right now dozens of topics demands to know why Ahri and MF and EZ was picked and not other ones, many people question the "Deadline" that was given for left behind characters, many of the players have so many different assumptions about them that might or might not be true.

I don't think MF really fits that well (it's ok I guess) but I think the other SGs match pretty well. Ahri and Ez certainly fit the magical girl/boy look. (Miss Fortune doesn't tho IMO, even if alternate the look just doesn't fit that right I think. She looks like Leilan from Puzzle and Dragons.)

I don't think MF fits very well myself. Fan-service never really had a place in the SG universe imo, so she kinda stands out like a sore thumb.

I mean we have Star Guardians who are protecting Hope, Light and Happiness, what's MF protecting? Tits?

I think that it's more so the skin LINE doesn't fit the champion.

For example, the battle boss skins belong to champions that primarily have telegraphed yet very punishing spells, like your standard boss. Only one who doesn't exactly fit this is Blitzcrank as all he has for warnings is the travel time on his grab.

We'd never see Battlecast Ahri for example as the battlecast skin line is made around bulky, function-over-form design principles. Ahri is very stylistic and is a bit too fluid to fit that ideal. Not to mention clashing personalities outside of a legendary skin nor is it in a complete opposites way like Lollipoppy(Super silly for pretty serious)

Now for champions that got skins that they couldn't really fit... These are very rare or not a thing at all as Riot is really good at avoiding this.

If Ahri is getting a robot skin, it'll either be Project or Program leaning towards Program. These skin lines see more regular releases and have a more sleek appearance which would better fit Ahri.

A robotic Ahri would be gross. But I'm not really a fan of the robotic series anyways.

After her finally getting this high tier skin, she'll probably settle down. I think she should still get a darker skin (a lot of them are bubblegum pop-y) at some point, like Soulstealer maybe; that + a Pool Party should honestly set her for the next several years tbh.

Random but I'd love to see a Patissier series.

That's the thing though, there's still two stipulations: It still has to be recognizable as the champion The alternate champion needs to fit the theme

Pentakill Sona is still very much Sona, just with a metal bend to it. If a theme is school children, you inherently get to cross off some champions.

I was going more with stuff like Rek'Sai for the second part. Also Academy wasn't "kids in school" so much as "troublemakers in school". So Darius did sort of fit in a weird way.
That said, that skin line went nowhere so it's not exactly a sign of a good skin line. People didn't WANT Academy Ahri and Academy Darius. I rarely see Academy Ekko but I've at least seen it (unlike the first two) just because he was popular at the time and the only Academy Vlad I've ever seen was mine.

I'm looking at the personality of each champion. I picked Pentakill Sona because she is depicted as hardcore in this skin (there was an ask riot Pentakill edition and Sona's answer was very loud, even containing a swearword, which for me is goes away her calm personality but I like their depiction). I picked Gatekeeper Gallo because of both of the pre reworked and reworked base Galio was depicted as very heroic and a protector while Gatekeeper Galio becomes basically th opposite of his personality, and becomes a gatekeeper to hell and sassy. For lollipoppy, it was more looking at her pre reworked case, a very serious character but then having candy based skin. Any champion can have a skin that totally defy's their personality and that should be fine. Hell, Star Guardian Tryndamere might even work for all we know.

feasibility for skins is less about their personality and more about their theme, kit/playstyle, and appearance. so for example galio's theme was a protector/guardian essentially, his gatekeeper skin upholds that theme but in an opposite context, you know what i mean? the other thing too is that its often times perfectly plausible to make a skin that's the complete opposite of a champions character, such as gentleman chogath (one of my favorites). i gave the example of star guardian tryndamere because there would be nothing remotely interesting visually either in game or through splash art that they could really do, and it wouldnt fit in any sort of way with his kit, theme, or anything.

The problem is that in general champions are limited to one legendary.

When your favourite champ get's something like starguardian jinx as legendary you'll be dissapointed that it's not something better and it never will be.

I think it also heavily depends on the skin in Question. Brolaf for example will generally be accepted as pretty damn rad. SG skins are some form of niche, while i love weeb lux for meme reasons and it being a good skin, the skinline is aimed at a specific audience and you can't even say you watched 1 episode of an anime that's not DB/pkmn without being told "feggit weeb omg kys".

I think this all comes to a couple different factors for people.

My main issue was a wasted potential and already existing themes for the champion. We have already gotten those more colourful fun skins on ahri. We have some more serious and "quiet" skins. I wanted to see something evil!

I don't see anyone saying that, but I do see people saying that other champs fit the Star Guardian theme way more than Ahri.

AurelionSol Diana Leona Soraka etc. Everyone knows Ahri got the legendary just because of the money Riot will make (see: recent Riven and Yasuo skins)

Character model sometimes is a limiting factor behind skins. Theme isn't necessarily the answer, but not every champion can fit every skin line.

That said, most humanoid champs can fit Star Guardian skin line. I'm not defending the SG Ahri choice.

Exactly. The whole point of these skins is to make a champ look different then normal, giving them a feel that isn't like the normal version of them. Giving them a skin only cause they "fit the theme" is the complete opposite of what the skins are for. Wukong for example has 4 Journey to the west inspired skins when he himself is inspired by Journey to the west. this results in Wukong having one of the most boring line of skins outside of champs with 2-3 skins. Just cause he fits the journey to the west theme, doesn't mean that should be the only kind of skin he should ever get. Riot needs to spend less time thinking "this champ doesn't suit the theme" and more time thinking "how can we get this champ TO fit the theme".
