However, who the ruined king became has yet to be revealed. In several of the stories it mentions that he has magical powers. One can assume that they grew exponentially when he unleashed the shadow isles.

Dude, it clearly says that he used a spell to die with his wife and stay with her forever.

Just because he died doesn't mean he stayed dead once the blessed isles were changed to the shadow isles. If it changed people like thresh and hecarim so profoundly when they were nowhere near the spell when it went off I can't imagine what it did to the ruined king.
