Just one example but I miss when League of Legends had good artwork with personality to it. Nowadays it's overdesigned garbage that also takes influence from vile shit like anime every so often like the atrocious Star Guardian skin series.

If you were around for League way back in the day, you'd know what I would mean. Look at that compared to now.i

Has nothing to do with the gameplay, I'm just disappointed in the visual direction for years now.

Wut?

The modern artwork looks way better. I think your nostalgia goggles are on a little too tight.

Either that or I just took the bait.

I'm sorry for your blindness... However, i'm quite impressed that you can still use a computer.

Old school style Rengar Splash art

Its clearly better and trully captures the personality of Rengar.

i absolutely completely agree with "overdesigned garbage that also takes influence from vile shit like anime every so often like the atrocious Star Guardian skin series." but they should be a little sharper and more detailed than s1 splashes. i also feel like the personality in the splashes are gone*[zombie-nunu-tears]*

Boy, I haven't seen this one in a loooong time; That's, uh, an interesting use of the Soft Brush. Are those bubbles or just really big wispy orbs coming out of his cards?

Seriously though, even if it's a matter of taste (I can see the charm in League's old, more cartoon-like and 'blocky' art-style), I'd argue that League's art quality & standards have all gone way up in the past few years since that first Twisted Fate splash was made- Not only that, but League still has this pastel, more painterly, vibrant style, while still being a bit more realistic and less goofy, and I think it's apparent that Riot has been trying very hard to go in that direction and preserve those old qualities- Some of which, by the way, existed even as far as in Twisted Fate's first splash; As we had then, we nowadays still have exaggerated body features & proportions, as well as those vibrant & painterly color:

  • Braum has some huge upper body but slimmer bottoms & legs, as well as very stylized animations cycles.
  • Fiora has incredibly angular features (intentionally).
  • Darius has his hooked, fleshy nose, and it's one of his recognizable & iconic facial features. He also wields an incredibly huge axe and performs an incredibly high jump.
  • Annie still has a pretty big head for her body and age.
  • Heimerdinger is super small but has the most goofy & big features (I know he's a yordle, but still)- His hair, his mustache, his energized animation cycles.
  • Singed still has incredibly vibrant crimson reds, poisonous greens and rusty golds, as well as his huge boots.
  • Taliyah, despite having mostly warm, dirty colors, features a very timeless style, with her textures looking very obviously hand-painted- at least in my eyes (IN A GOOD WAY!)
  • Ekko has his large, shiny, white mohawk, incredibly vibrant red colors (scarf) and glowing teals of his clock-hand, Z-Drive and other machines.
  • Zac is Zac.
  • A lot of modern champions & skins are made with proportionally big hands (Ryze, Ekko, Acadmey Vladimir- to name a few).
  • Yasuo's hair is very stylized- I'm not sure such a hair-style can be executed in real life.
  • Ivern has a very unique silhouette in both his model and animation cycles (most notably is his walk).
  • The texture of Vel'Koz's bony shell is so cartoon-like and seems very hand-painted and I love it.
  • The two shopkeepers of Butcher's Bridge had the same "painterly" style that Taliyah and Vel'Koz feature, as well as some very goofy but awesome-looking non-proportionate (rather "cartoon-like") body shapes.

Those are just a few examples that I could think of off the top of my head.

-_-

So, sure, the age of spooky skeletons, pizza feet and black, lonely few hairs is coming to an end, but most of the good things of the good ol' art style are still being preserved and yet modernized to a much less "technically ugly" quality.

Hell, you are right! Who could forget this awesome piece of art right here? Not like that disgusting "improvement" https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--YJ7gNGBM--/c_scale,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/1533559420882611017.jpg . . . . . . . . K A P P A

I mean, look at him, he is like a bad cosplay :D

Games can't keep nostalgic out-of-date art styles forever. Even World of Warcraft updated their models and art, they have to keep up with other games so as to not become dated and uninteresting.

As an artist myself, I will agree that a lot of what league has is over designed, but do take those goggles off mate. While it may be over designed it is still better than the older art.

Now calling the Anime style shit is kinda ridiculous. I am not entirely sure if you are aware of this but this is not the anime style. http://cdn.garenanow.com/webupdate/live/lolphweb/news/2016%20October/7/Star%20Guardian/Articles/Set.jpg

It is the "westernized" anime style . The real anime style is simple like this. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/88/50/5c/88505cb7020bbda3d18683e4a164d271.jpg

Do you see the difference in detail? Now I know what your gonna say "but there are a lot of detailed anime that people watch" that again is anime influenced by the western cultures.

Just wanted to let you know.

Sadly people are really like this..

ryona1/31/2017, 10:18:10 PM1 votes

Like c'mon people, I'm not shitting on the game but the art here. If I hated playing the game, I wouldn't be around.

Just look at this for another example

How can you not admit they ruined Poppy? She lost all semblance of personality to be this little anime girl cutout.

He's blue, has the torso of the incredible hulk, and looks like he's underwater.. what part of that is better than modern splash?
