They might use this if they ever try to go into the alternative universes/different timelines plotline - which WILL happen, considering Zaun seems to tinker with old Urtistan tech. If a single street rat can get it working, then what about a number of the most genious scientists the city state has to offer?

Zaun WILL have a time-travel plot somewhen in the distant future. And I suspect this will also lead through many alternative universes we know from skins. Imagine a story where Ekko or Vlad meets his "Academy Self". Dr. Mundo suddenly meeting Coporate Mundo (MUNDO MAKE MEDICAL BUISNESS AS MUNDO PLEASE!). People coming across Brolaf - in the Bro-Timeline where every champ has a Bro-version (ideal excuse for more of these skins ^^).

And somewhere in this timeline mess there is one that still has the summoners and the institute.
