They wanted to use Taliyahs earth magic as a weapon. In particular they wanted Taliyah to crush an ionian village and when Taliyah refused they threw her overboard their ship

why not just crush the village and then escape? That way, they wouldn't throw her overboard.

Just a hypothetical question, but if Taliyah did what they told her to do, what would they ask her to do next?

You know most humans don't want to kill people,Taliyah is simply the kind of person who doesn't want to kill hundreds of people just to save her own skin.
