What kind of story would you give a Dark Knight Champion?

One of my favorite games of all time is Final Fantasy IV. Cecil, the Dark Knight of the tale, is a really likable character in that he wields a dark power for good, but worries that said power will turn him evil.

Or to give another more recent example, you have Alternis Dim from Bravely Default. I won't say much about him because that would involve HUGE spoilers for the game, but I'll say that he's definitely got the Dark Knight thing going for him.

In regards to that, I'm of the opinion that League needs a "dark, but heroic" type of character at some point. Now, before you say , , or , they are not what I'm looking for. Vayne's obsessed with hunting down dark magic users to the point of being a zealot (she'd kill Annie if needed), Varus obtained his dark power to take revenge on Noxus (he'd want Noxus to burn to the ground), and Lucian is out to avenge Senna (not necessarily "good"). And no, doesn't count either. He is pure evil with the whole soul-enslaving thing going on.

No, I'm thinking something like a Demacian Knight Commander who, for one reason or another, is forced to take on a terrible curse in order to do some good deed (i.e. save innocent lives), but said curse is slowly eating away at his/her morality and threatens to turn him/her evil. I say Demacian because it'd make the most sense; the other nations don't really have knights, for one.

Would this be an interesting story to explore, or is it "too vanilla"?

Kassadin actually comes pretty close to that. Technically, he entered the Void and could only escape by allowing the Void to fuse with him.

Now, his lore isn't that of a paladin gone dark knight. A bit more like a scholar too curious for his own good becoming something of a gatekeeper between Valoran/Runeterra and the Void.

He saw the dangers and horrors of the Void, and made it his purpose to prevent any being (human and monster) from crossing the boundary between the two worlds.

That said, his lore also states "a part of him died that day" which could very well imply it's only a matter of time before what's left of him saps away as the Void takes over.

First off, when you posted "Dark Knight," I was worried. "Batman" is not as good a character as others would argue.

Back to the point, we already have a champion that is essentially "good," but is corrupted by an evil force: Kassadin

Unfortunately, with stories like this, there either needs to be a sort of divine providence to rid the character of their corrupting influences (Cecil the Dark Knight into Cecil the Paladin in FFIV) or some sort of self-sacrifice when the big enemy is gone (as seen in Terminator 2: Judgement Day).

That is a trope often used and to me would seem like a vanillia character unless the lore was done really well, which lets be honest, is not a possibility.

We actually don't know shize of what Mordekaiser has done nor what has happened to him. He might be a good fella who wants to keep the undeath sealed while playing the big-metal-deathmachine role (not that he doesn't like it).

Overall we don't know how extreme Vayne is. She says she hunts those who have lost themselves in their dark magic,which would not include people who are still rather sane,despite their use of dark magic(in which case annie is probably still too good to be considered lost in her dark magic).

And Lucian doesn't just want to avenge his wife,he wants to save her soul(not to mention that he hunted monsters to protect humanity before,I mean thresh is a sadistic serial killer,who will torture his victims for eternity,he is someone who deserves to be put down)

But in the end neither of them uses any form of dark power(lucian even uses light magic). Like many here said kassadin comes pretty close to the general idea you described,but I would also like someon who uses dark magic to do good things to subvert this whole "dark-is-evil,light is good"-thing.

I'm not sure how to make a dark knight unique enough to join the roster. He/she would share a lot of aspects with existing characters; others have already brought up Kassadin. And you bring up the "vanilla" problem. A dark knight could work, but they'd have to be creative about it, I think.

Hell yeah, Cecil! A while back, I ground him to level 99 before he became a paladin, just to see how powerful he could get. Man, his stats were horrid; he hardly had over 5k health and barely had enough intellect for a magic defense multiplier (since his spirit drops and stays at 1). It was interesting, at least.
