The people around the campfire might be the survivors - or the descendants of the survivors - maybe it wasn't a complete massacre after all? They don't seem to be holding a grudge against Bard, either way.

A Superb Villain5 votesIn my mind, we are seeing one portion of Ionia's invasion by Noxus, possibly even the reason for it. Assaulting a peaceful nation, an easier conquest with substantially less risk, overflowing with untapped resources is another means of propagating future aggression.
Bard is intervening on behalf of the Stone, which has quite a cosmic appearance, not the people.

The problem with these events being separated by a great deal of time is that at the end of this video is when the constellation appears.

Implying that it disappeared in the first place. Potentially, even those this is conjecture, Bard's constellation disappeared not too long after he left with the relic and the shrines, signalling he had left the physical plane of Runterra. The constellation has become apparent again as a signal of his impending return. Perhaps the star signs "appear" more strongly and "disappear" all together in correspondence to when things art happening in regards to them; Bard just left Runeterra; the constellation sparkles like a firework display, and then disappears afterwards, kinda like a natural omen.
Also by appear and disappear I don't mean stars just up and vanishing, but more like the constellations being harder to spot and the stars that make them up being obstructed or dim.

Major Sparkles3 votesI see things differently. When they state that the Bard constellation was absent not long ago; I think it means that it had never existed until recently. At the time of "The Wonder Above," those stargazers probably had grown accustomed to the twinkling constellation, it was ordinary for them. Maybe they had forgotten it's significance, maybe not. Perhaps it was a village Eldar who was reminding his youthful peers of the great cosmic change during his lifetime.

Bard senses when the power is used and immediately guesses something's wrong. He appears and uses his power to whisk away the relics, taking them to someplace beyond the mortal plane.
I suppose this gives insight on to why Noxus invaded Ionia without a League to intervene; Boram wanted Ionia's ancient secrets for some reason.

Humans are fools and will fight over it, so Bard took it from the old man and prevented it to be used. He cares for the balance of this world and not the people, otherwise he would be a generic good guy like most of the champions.
If humans are destroyed, the world would know peace.

I interpreted it differently. The old man was trying to take the orb to the top of the mountain for Bard to pick it up. The tribe being attacked didn't use it to protect themselves. He used it out of desperation or accident. Bard noticed what was happening and picked it up himself rather than help the tribe not have to use the relic.

He doesn't seem to have nor understand mortal emotions and feelings though.
At least Bard is better than humans in a sense he works actively and religiously to preserve balance of power when it's threatened, essentially his personality is just like that of his appearance, he is a celestial robot.

This makes me think that if Bard is a caretaker, he is not a caretaker of humans and their like. He's starting to seem like a real peachy kind of guy!

EDIT: Apparently the subtitle is "we'll die without it", which, based on other comments I've been reading (from reds and players alike), I guess the old man was more intent on the protection of his village than the protection of the artifact. My initial thought on what happened was the old man was moving the artifact to the top of the mountain where Bard would then pick it up and therefore it'd be safe, but with everything now taken into account, I would guess that the old man intended to use the stone at the top of the mountain to try to protect the village, where Bard didn't like the old man using it as a weapon and thus takes everything away.
