So did Riven master the Wind Technique or not ?

According to the lore, only Yasuo mastered the legendary wind technique, under the guidance of the 'master'. However, Riven is the only other one who was capable of using it (to kill the master).

My friend and I disagree on something, he says Riven's technique is not complete (hence broken wings) and I say she mastered it. She just executes it differently.

So which of us was right? Looking for answers from people who keep up with the lore

When Yasuo sees riven use Broken Wings (Q) - "Hm, Three swift strikes"

Note yasuo's ult also uses three swift stikes

Also apparently they both use a "wind blade"

"Another wind blade??"

When he sees riven use Wind Slash (R+R)

he says "Who taught you that??" in a surprised tone

Note in the lore it doesn't say "the ONLY to master it"

It says "Yasuo was the only student in a generation to master the legendary wind technique"

riven could have been from a different generation of students I suppose

So i'm guessing she did master the technique in one form or another . . .

edit: so apparently all of my links are broken. rito games inc is on to me.

Have you considered that Riven's abilities aren't based on the same teachings as Yasuo's? Given that her upbringing seems almost militant, I doubt she had the time to go off and train with some reclusive hermit master of wind techniques. On top of that, if she were using the same sort of techniques that Yasuo employs she would be much less about brute force and much more about finesse. She even utilizes Ki, a spiritual power that has absolutely nothing to do with any kind of wind techniques, to deal a burst of damage radiating out from her and, from what it looks like to me, as her shield and what she uses to dash forwards when using it.

Riven is many things, but she is far from dainty about how she goes about dealing out retribution to those who tower dive her. She's brutal, unrelenting, and while she may appear mobile that's only because her abilities are literally throwing her around through brute force, not because she's flowing with the wind to move.

So far as I can tell, Yasuo is surprised to see someone using techniques that resemble the teachings that he went through, but nothing more. Riven isn't really the type to have killed a master for no reason given that it's the mass loss of life during the war that made her abandon her own people in the first place. She's against the senseless loss of life, and she has respect for those who fight honorably. She would have no reason to kill Yasuo's master.

The much more likely story is that it has something to do with Ao Shin, the yet unreleased wind dragon champion that was teased at about two years ago. Plenty of champions say special things around other champions that have nothing to do with lore and more to do with their personality. Gnar will mock a Garen by shouting out "DEMAGLIO" but he isn't an enemy of Demacia, he's just having fun.

Yasuo is just noticing some odd similarities between his own style and Riven's. I'd be surprised if he didn't, but with Riven a fallen warrior seeking redemption the idea of her taking the life of an old master doesn't sit well in my opinion.

Riven ult is not a "wind" technique, just read her ult. Riven just uses the stored energy on her sword that she used to reforms it. The name is just "wind slash" , but it has nothing to do with wind. She just throws the magical energy that was stored on her sword.

Why the hell do people want to ship them?

Actually, I'm not sure I want the answer...

Riven uses Ki, and just happens to have the word "wind" in her ultimate. Ability names aren't necessarily literal. Veigar doesn't create the universe (nor a black hole) whenever he bursts somebody, that is not the last time Lux will use her laser, the sands are not actually angry, Sion is easily hindered by the nearest bolted object, etc.

Crescendo might be technically correct, though.

Riven has not mastered the winds. Have you seen her flailing movements?

From what we can see as facts Riven skill seems raw and somehow bound to the runic power of the sword plus her ability to swing it while Yasuo has a refined style which doesn't only use wind power with swings but his whole body.

Yup, let's all blame Riven, the Soldier who would be better used commanding troops then assassinating some elder

Just ignore that one ASSASSIN that has the ability to COPY people

Totally Riven, couldn't be annnnybody else. There's no way the Black Rose could have mimicked wind magic somehow, not at all! Not like a certain person can imitate people easily, noooope
