My Opinion on Mecha Kingdoms

Riot has recently stated they are doing some new things with skins (be it champs aside from Lux, Jinx, Ezreal, Vastayans etc.) which is good, and other things such as themes. I love that we are getting some great stuff this year as well as events with new modes etc.

But there is one new thing I just really can't get behind: the removal of classic holiday skins in favor of other skins that do not fit.

  1. Instead of doing Christmas, you did Night and Dawn. Not even remotely cool. Grranted you released candy skins that had a christmasy look but there was no holiday event. I love holidays and LoL is one of the major ways in which I celebrate by using holiday skins even throughout the year. Lots of ppl seem to use them too as many of my matches I see either Halloween of Xmas skins. On that note...

  2. Replacing normal Lunar New Year (and not giving Twitch his rightful skin) during the year of the RAT and instead making more mecha skins (which imho are the worst of the tech skins. I love robots, but mecha just isnt that good tbh. Project, Super Galaxy, Lancer, Pulsefire etc. have a sleek and smooth look about them and even Hextech is more smooth. Mecha is too clunky for my tastes. So replacing really cool looking lunar skins with Mecha is just a huge feax pa in my book. My saying is if it aint broke dont fix it. Holidays are important and celebrated by many ppl. Its unfair and a little bit disrespectful to for go those holidays in favor of skins with the goal of making more money, rather than allow gamers to celebrate holidays in their favorite game. (Yes ik its just a game, but holidays in media is important to me as it allows me a new way to enjoy the seasons, and since LoL is my top game, thats how I celebrate along with IRL stuff. So my advie to you Riot is making the popular money making skins, but not at the expense of traditional long living themes and holiday themes.

That said I congratulate you on the other skins coming up, particularly Dragonslayer, Dark Star, and of course Yuumi and Rengar;s skins. Meow.

So take this as my personal opinion and not as a declaration as what must happen. It is merely advice and my feelings about the topic.

I'm gonna pile on a bit and say... I just don't like the mecha kingdoms skins that much.

This is coming from someone that has all of the other mecha skins because I love giant robots v kaiju theme. I'm all about it. But even when I do see these skins in game... they just don't evoke that theme very well. Malph, Aatrox, and Sion fit the "giant robot" aesthetic so much better, and those skins are neat. But I just don't see it with Jax. I know they were trying to do something kinda new and different, but they didn't land on a resonant theme with me.

Also, where are the kaiju? They keep making Giant Robot skins, but for those that pay attention, we only have one Kaiju skin. Giant Crab Enemy Urgot. And they had the audacity to put it in its own skin set with no other skins lol. I'm scratching my head on that one. Where's my King Kong Wuk? Where's my Godzilla Cho'gath?

Anyway, I hope more skins doesn't ultimately mean "less imaginative skins." I'm not a huge fan of the new dragonslayer skins, either, and that's another skin line I've been deeply invested in up until now. Many (not all) of the old skins had a lot of thought and care put into the design. I'm all for more skins, but if the quality drops, I don't see how that's going to help them in the long run. Mass produced, generic skins are not something I ever wanted, I can assure you.

The fact of the matter is, unfortunately for you and the others who enjoy the christmassy skins, that is was broke. If the skins were consistently selling well we would be seeing loads more of them. We see it with Project and Blood Moon.

The last set of actual christmas skins we got were kindof a bust. Snowman master yi? Really? Lunar Revel on the other hand has varied a lot throughout the years so mecha kingdoms, whilst certainly very different, doesnt feel too out of place to me.

Its a shame that a thing you enjoyed wasnt delivered this year. But I wouldnt call it disrespectful. And isnt the whole point of the holidays about the experience and not the stuff you buy? :P

That said, im a mecha and kaiju nut yet Mecha Kingdoms just did NOT do it for me. The mecha bits got kinda lost and the details are too intricate to be appreciated ingame, imo.

They said they make a skin for Twitch this year since its the year of the rat, but I agree that it should be released for lunar revel unless it is part of a zodiac-based skin-line, because otherwise it'd just feel like another skin, not like one that relates to the year of the rat.

In general I'm ok if they mix the events a bit up, it can give each year its own theme that still relates to the overall concept of the holiday. The mecha kingdoms skins are for example based on the 4 guardian spirits of chinese mythology, so they still fit the theme of china-based skins for the lunar revel. They pretty much did this kind of thing already with halloween to some extend in the past, where we got the more serious death sworn skins in one year, while another one was more witch-themed with Morgana and Tristana trying to summon the devil.

Night&Dawn did feel out of place though, since it didn't feel like it relates to christmas and winter at all.

Twitch is too ugly to make a skin for ._. other champs deserve it way more like garen duh

Agree. Year of the rat and twitch didn't get a lunar new year skin. Truly a head scratcher.

I still think Program holds the trophy of worst looking tech skinline. But yeah, these ones aren't particularly good looking either. A few were "okey", but none passed that. And i'm sure as hell not taking out my wallet for a skin that's just "okey".

Give me rat skins! I love rodents, I need rat skins. I've been drawing a Heimerdinger mouse, a Garen mouse, and a Darius mouse for emotes and profile pics. Hmm...I could draw Twitch for the year of the rat.

I always pull out the Snowmerdinger skin for December. I think a video on Youtube talking about skins said that certain skin lines weren't popular, like snow related skins. I guess that is why they didn't do Christmas skins this time? I think mechas are cool and the skins are decent. Just not over lunar skins.

They should make more Lunar New year skins based off of Chinese mythology like Diana's. An interesting one could be Lunar Archer Aphelios.

Yeah, it kind of sucks that we aren't getting that many holiday themed skins nowadays. I mean, yes we got Halloween but afterwards got a very limited feeling Snowdown with Candy Kingdom (which in the end I thought were 'meh'). We skipped proper Lunar Reveal skins this year, especially for Twitch, in favor of another mecha series but a bit more asian-themed (again, kind of 'meh' to me). I would like to go back and maybe get a few holiday themed skins, just to help get more festive for whatever time of year it is.

Imo riot sucks at mecha skins. They should have made more dope eternum and Headhunter skins instead.

Jax - by far - the only good mecha skin with Sion on second and maybe Fiddel as third place. (regarding all mecha themed skins)
