Well according to League's community. . .
After we've been to Shurima. And Mount Targon. And the Freljord. After that probably.
EDIT: I actually really like Sona so I want her to get some story stuff going in the foreseeable future, but for now we've have a schedule booked with three different locales at least for probably the next six months or more. Anything can happen, but we have these things in the sorta relative future.

She is listed as a rival for Jhin. I don't know if it's for a specific reason or if it's just that she's a performer and taking his spotlight, but it seems like they set up some more lore for .
Her lore is great. Please keep it away from being retcon'd into the next bullshit event.
Maybe when she gets reworked into an actual interesting champion with an interesting kit.

Even though they phased out summoners from the lore. 
I just really hope that when they do add to her lore, they don't remove Lestara from it.

Little known fact about Sona, all of the Smite and Ignite songs were written by her, and they are actually her past lore. Pentakill Sona is the real Sona.

It would be nice to see what Sona actually does. All we know is she was an orphan, apparently killed her adopted mother although not necessarily on purpose and thought to be the work of the Etawhl doing it itself, was secretly training herself how to be combative with the Etawhl and the rest was that she joined LoL to show off that combative skill, but now we know that can't happen.
she does have a story... she was abandoned on an orphanage's steps in zaun with her etwahl, and grew up there. her caretakers tried many times to sell her etwahl for extra money, but it would always come back. eventually someone came by and took a huge interest in sona and her etwahl, and took them in, training and teaching her how to use it....
