Let's Discuss Travel in League's Universe

I've recently been writing some stuff based on League (when am I not ugh) and I came to a point where I had to have some characters travel a long distance. But oh no! League doesn't have a good measure of distance! Well, that's what I -did- say until I did some digging. Bear in mind, the upcoming post is gonna have some ugly, shoddy math so try not to get too mad at me.

#The Key: The Medarda Heirloom and length-by-map.

https://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/featured/piltover/medarda-heirloom

This is what started it off. But it's not the easiest to determine. So first, we need to determine distances and "length" of the area. Piltover was the easiest section for me because it has a real life comparison: The Panama City/Panama Canal. Both are port cities that bridge together two small continents and serve as an important hub. The two also look similar, albeit Panama is horizontal while Piltover is vertical. See here:

https://puu.sh/zbGhX/dc716b5369.jpg https://puu.sh/zbGii/c619a39215.jpg

This is where we get into rough estimates. Using google maps, I measured that the edge of this section of land from one end to the other (With panama in the middle) is roughly 190 miles or roughly 306 kilometers.

https://puu.sh/zbGom/d8162e6c54.jpg

We'll use this as a measure. We'll call it one "CM" because I'm arrogant I'm egotistical I need validation so we have a rough key of distances.

#The Second Step: The Big Map

For this part, we lack an official league map. Luckily, an incredibly talented player named Killaburn made his own examples of what the map is and what it'd look like. I think this is a great example so we're going to be using it.

https://i.imgur.com/EAkP2la.png

That said, his map is so big that one CM wouldn't show up on it. So we're going to multiply it by 3. 3 CMs or, as well call it, One KB.

Add a grid to with a key.

And add rough dots based on capitals Killaburn suggested!

#Part 3: Distances and Travel

But we're not done yet! According to the Medarda Heirloom, it takes one day (Roughly 24 hours) to travel from Piltover to Kumangra by boat. This is roughly the length of one CM. A Spanish Galleon has a speed of roughly 5 knots, or roughly 6 mph or 9 km/h. Considering that's 216 km or 144 miles, it can be inferred that Piltover uses ships that are either steam powered or are faster than old, standard ships. We'll assume a ship goes about 8 mph/12.75 km/h.

To make some rough estimates:

  • From Piltover to Demacia is roughly 26 days or so.
  • Piltover to the Freljord would be around 38 days. (Over a month!)
  • Noxus invading Ionia had a travel time of roughly 9 days.

The other thing to remember is that these are on a boat. If Runeterra was completely flat and you walked at a standard human walking rate (3 mph or about 5 km/h) which means you'd cover 72 miles/120 km in a day, it would...

  • take you 2 and 2/3rds of a day to walk one CM without stopping/resting/eating.
  • take you roughly 8 days to walk one KB
  • take you roughly 32 days of walking to go from Piltover to Noxus.
  • take you 136 days of walking to go from Targon to the shores of Ionia.

Again, these are all rough measurements using a fan map and some speculation. That said, I hope this helps if you ever plan on writing a world-spanning adventure from one nation to another!

Technically there is no traveling from noxus, because all lands are noxian lands.

wrong; all lands will be claimed by the mist and their king Mordekaiser shall rise above them all.

Here I was wondering if it was bait - but that was way to self centered of me. The Captain is well known for trying to make sense of the world for the sake of his writing - and wonderfully, sharing his theories with other potential writers here too.

I do have a document with all sorts of travel time estimates, etc. From the fastest Piltovian trade vessel (like the sorts that would engage in the tea trade to London, with massive wagers on the winner), to the average distance traveled by a dormun beast in a day across the Shuriman deserts, to how far an army and its support can manage at a sustainable march.

I can't share much of that yet, unfortunately, so in the spirit of being no use whatsoever to anyone, here's a contextless fact:

  • By dormun beast with a native rider, from Nashramae to the capital of Shurima, would be approximately 65 days travel.

Aaaaannnd documented.

Also based on the description of just how big a Dormun is, or rather the enormous weight it can carry, I would assume simply walking is faster, right?

ModCaptainMårvelous3 votes

That's my assumption. Dormun are slow, giant animals but the plus side is that you can dump all your stuff on them and you don't have to worry about them dehydrating in the desert.

So 65 days but you can also bring all your stuff and even do a convoy.

Whyte Lyon3 votes

Pffft. You don't need a convoy, everyone and more will fit on the Dormun's back.

Some Shuriman nomads have created entire towns upon the backs of the Dormun; enormous, armor-plated beasts that wander the wastes.

Actually that's a Ralsiji not a Dormun. As of yet we have no clue what a Dormun actually looks like but if you can fit a town on it's back then im going to assume it's a very wide creature.

I have a lot to learn.

kagepaladin1 votes

RekSai would she target the Dormun or no because that may cause some interruptions?

Kaeblen1 votes

I would guess she had a preference for targeting humans. Given that her tremor-sense would have great difficulty telling between a Dormun with or without riders (roughly the same size and weight), that is likely one of the big advantages of using Dormun over other forms of travel (fewer Rek'sai attacks).

Oh. My. Gosh. You have all that figured out? Woo!

I have a question, then. How long would Taliyah need to surf that same route from Nashramae to Shurima?

If you want to enter more detail, then... -Would it matter whether she surfed on her rock or rode her Weaver’s Wall? We saw her ride both and use the latter to speed up during her trailer. -How does she handle drag and sand blast high-speed travel over dunes would cause? Moving at high speed could make holding onto the rock difficult. Stoneweaving lets you move stone, but since sand is Azir’s theme, I wouldn’t expect her to be able to move it. -Are there terrain effects? Can she move faster or more easily over bare rock than, say, dunes or earth? -How long can she surf without rest? Is it just like surfing on a surfboard, or does she have to push herself along with magic?

Ensorcell1 votes

I would imagine that since sand it just tiny bits of rock, she should be able to move them. As for the weavers wall/surfing thing, I think that she would likely use weavers wall between places without any geological formations, and then surf until she needs it again.

You're gonna laugh, but at some point, Bio's document did contain Taliyah rock surfing speed estimates. Bioluminescence is Heimerdinger confirmed.

You should get your dormun beast into a shop. I feel that shouldn't take more than approximately 60 days travel on one that's recently been tuned up. :P

Targon is on the western side of the southern continent, we believe the mountain neighbors with Shurima.

Makes perfect sense why Shurima is a dry desert. Mount Targon scummily stops all the moisture from the west seas from ever reaching Shurima in the east.

I always thought that and the Great Barrier were contributing factors. I know Targon is huge and all, just not sure if it's wide enough on its own to completely drought Shurima, Icathia and quite possibly most of the continent as well. However there is zero evidence that the Barrier is still canon, so...

It seems that Mount Targon mountain range is the Great Barrier in the new lore. Like you have the Mount Targon thats the ever changing magical mountain, but the mountains around it is the Great Barrier. It would fit for a Great Barrier being the barrier against the western rain shadows that prevent mosture to come to the dry deserts of Shurima.

This is your problem. You're not using a Portuguese Caravel.
