He may have a very short placeholder lore entry but Riot seems to still associate him with Crystals since his new passive's basically an oasis for crystal beings like himself. What if the place he is guarding's nothing less than the sanctum of the ancient brackerns, hibernating until the world's ripe for them to awaken from their slumber?
Maybe even a retcon for the crystal scar as the Brackern's lair?
My assumption has always been that Skarner's lore was just shifted to Shurima and adjusted to accomodate for the new local, so in my eyes:
That's what I've assumed since his short lore was introduced, and with the introduction of the Crystal Spires, which basically function very similarly to the Arachia in his original Champion Judgement, I've only grown more confident in my assumption.
EDIT: As an additional note I'm waiting on the day they VU Crystal Scar to be in Shurima. I can practically see it.
Yeah I think this is the case.
In fact I think it is no coincidence that Skarner(and possibly his people) have been relocated to an underground cave in shurima and that we got a whole race of underground void monsters(
) that lives at the exact same place,just a few months after the shurima event.
The Rek'sai and the xer'sai burrowing into skarners territory trying to kill the brackern would definetly be a cool conflict.
Yes I think Riot still intends for him to be the guardian of his Brakern race. He should get a longer lore entry like the champs in Bilge event did. But, with the IoW removed, I still see his story as less... interesting than it was: before, it was shown that Summoners not only created, but almost destroyed the Brakern, and then Skarner was faced with a decision to join the IoW in order to protect his people. Now he is just... patrolling the entrance.
Skarner is still from The Crystal Scar. The updated lore is just to show he's currently in Shurima. Old lore didn't give him any current location or what he's up to since emerging. And since Skarner is a crystal scorpion... crystals will always fit, no matter what.
