So PBE. Morde's lore got changed.

All things must die... and yet I live on.'' The baleful revenant Mordekaiser is among the most terrifying and hateful spirits haunting the Shadow Isles. He has existed for countless centuries, shielded from true death by necromantic sorcery and the force of his own dark will. Those who dare face Mordekaiser in battle risk a horrific curse: he enslaves his victims' souls to become instruments of destruction.

As well as moving his title from "Master of Metal" to "Lord of Death".

So, I'll be honest: This sounds a LOT like they're boosting Morde up from "#1 General on the Shadow Isles" to "He's pretty much the ruined king now." or at least on par with the ruined king in terms of power.

Well we alot of people have gotten that feel of Morde. Like he is the one who rules over the Shadow Isles and does spooky stuff (not metal stuff since ya know, to soon?).

Although I am curious if the Ruined King is even that strong at all, I mean he is just another person right? All he had going for him was that he was a king. Is he a resident of the Shadow Isles mopping in his sorrow or is he just another one of the mind less, blood thirsty underlings?

I actually suspected that the Ruined King is actually long dead and buried, and never even became a notable unliving being. Destroyed by the very power he tried to penetrate via the magic his sorcerers invoked, it was Mordekaiser, the one who orchestrated it all, who took control of the Shadow Isles and set about building up a legion of the dead to serve him.

To that end I feel like Kalista and Hecarim are both beings who owe their current situations to Morde's manipulations, but this is me musing and speculating more than anything.

Ya I kinda see this as well. With the lack of lore or anything about him he seems like not a major piece in the whole scheme, huh how ironic. The whole time the king was the pawn.

Perhaps with the mist rolling on threw we'll uncover some more secrets before they to are lost in the endless abyss of the Black Mist.

I kinda wanna have a scene where somebody, maybe Lucian or Maokai, finds the Ruined King's throne, and on it is a partially degraded skeleton with a cracked crown, and then Morde shows up and is like "In the end, the Ruined King was nothing compared to the Lord of Death."

That would be totally cool, especially if Mord lifts the crown and say his line.

Although I would like to see a tour of the shadow isles, showing us how it is right now and doing flash backs to how it once was. Ending in the throne room, on the throne would be Mord staring directly at us and when it ends on the black screen all we would hear is the laugh of the new king.

I feel like those flashbacks would do great in a story-line where the Shadow Isle champions struggle to regain their memories, and remember exactly what happened to bring them to this state. I feel like that'd be cool, I mean imagine if Hecarim remembered his life as a human, remembered Mordekaiser's evil deeds, and realized what the hell he had become, and then going absolutely berserk and fighting Morde.

That actually reminds me.

What do we know of Hecarim? Surely he was some one of great strength and power, right? Which then leads to one of the questions I have been trying to figure out for the longest time.

How did the Shadow Isles champions become the Shadow Isles champions withought turning into the underlings that we see in Lucian's splash art?

Well with the small paragraphs it's pretty much confirmed that Hecarim was human before he died, and is an amalgamation of beast and man, as opposed to some sort of centaur turned undead.

How did they become as they are and not as a mindless scourge? Potentially due to the strength of their souls or perhaps because the power holding them to this world is substantially stronger than common wraiths and ghouly-ghouls. I don't know the answer, but it's probably critical to understanding things.

I was never one of those people who assumed that Hecarim was some sort of centaur but with the lack of his background was not something i dismissed entirely.

As far as the whole why Shadow isles champion thing goes, you bring up a good point. Perhaps the souls of the Shadow Isles champions were strong and just simply was enhanced by the Black Mist. Something that I personally believe in though is that the ritual that was used to break the seal of life and death has not been closed, if you understand what i'm getting at.

Perhaps, as you stated, souls that have more strength than others were brought to the ritual and were made into what we see now. I always believed the effects of the Black Mist was reversible and felt that the portal had more use than just allowing the dead to run amok.

My take on the idea:

Souls are emotions and memories developed in life and time-locked in death. Without life and time, Souls do not develop.
These memories and emotions, wraiths and spectres whose souls are reanimated can pass-through and share each other's life experiences. Those that share the same may congregate.
Undying souls that congregate may unite and form an amalgamated visage of that memory and emotion into the corporeal domain:

Thresh: Torture
Hecarim: War
Kalista: Vengeance
Yorick: Bereave/Malady?
Mordekaiser: Misery (most frequent memory/emotion. must be strongest)

Common trend here are negative memories and emotions.

Sion and Urgot are not cursed. I think they're something else related to hemomancy and techmaturgy, and are independent.

Additionally, where do Meeps come from? Can the Undying and Ascendants see them?

How do we know that Mordekaiser is just the villain, and not perhaps a victim who has adapted to his situation, perhaps being consumed by it? Mordekaiser's previous lore had him predate the Shadows Isles, but that isn't made clear here, so perhaps in tying him to the Isles directly, they are saying he became a part of it?

A necromantic spell, sounds like the kind that also turned the Shadow Isles into what it is, and perhaps there were two sides of the forces of the Shadow Isles? Those who were loyal to the Ruined King and remained loyal to him after the spell took affect, and perhaps those who turned against the Ruined King after the atrocity he committed?

Perhaps Mordekaiser led a coup d'état and overthrew the Ruined King with those who sided with him, and thus he now leads the Shadow Isles? Yet he is unhappy about his situation because he remembers everything of his past life, and unlike the other Shadow Isles champions who are content with their state, Mordekaiser is not content and can never be, and plots to find a way out of his miserable existence. Thus, he is not to be trusted, for while he leads the Shadow Isles, he - like the Ruined King before him - has plans for the future, which may impact and possibly even worsen the current situation of the Isles, but then again: what will you do in the face of ambition and desperation?

Mordekaiser's pain is his power, and it is also the only thing that connects him to his former life, the only thing that allows him remember what it was like to be mortal, to be human.

It would also fit the situation with the altars of the twisted treeline: both husband and wife are divided and different in how they view their situations.

But here is something you must notice about the wife on the west altar.

"For the King!"

She obviously supports the Ruined King, but there is no such dialogue for the husband of the east altar.

Perhaps the divide was that the wife supported and remained loyal to the king, even if she did not agree with his decision nor what came out of it, while the husband grew resentful with the changes and helped overthrow the king, but eventually grew consumed by his state of undeath and supports spreading it to others now.

Overall I think that Morde is either planning to overthrow the ruined king or that he is secretly controlling the ruined king.

I mean lets be honest here,Morde is the evil overlord of the game and evil overlords are generally rulers,not followers.
