In my headcannon, those masks are restraints, making sure that they only hunt people when it is their time to die.
Should you remove them, Kindred will go on an unrestricted hunt; Wolf running about killing everything he sees, and Lamb trying to spare them Wolf's jaws by killing them herself.
This brings about the end of life on Runeterra.

It'd be more apt to say they're the masks themselves. The bodies are just manifestations.

I'm going to assume the masks work like inhibitors and when they're removed, Lamb and Wolf just absolutely merk whatever is in their path.
