Janna splash color tweaks - combining Ravencroft64 & TeHjAcK's edits.

So here are my thoughts: I liked the original splash, I didn't think it looked too out of place in comparison to newer splashes. I do like the new splash, the pose and effects are really cool, and it looks more in line with the new art style of the other updated newer splashes. But I do agree with others that in the new splash Janna looks a bit too pale. And I loved TeHjAcK's edits http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/story-art/PZxbhkaA-i-feel-as-if-janna-splash-could-have-used-a-bit-more-tweaking but Ravencroft64 brings up a good point that the new splash has a lot of blue values http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/story-art/LG4c7jZK-i-figured-out-why-jannas-splash-art-makes-me-blue

So I took the two and combined them. I do like the blues of the original, they just needed a bit more saturation as TeHjAcK's version shows while the increased warmth of Ravencroft64's version in the skin tone and hair defniitely makes Janna look a bit more alive and not so much like a corpse. The hair color I think is a good compromise between the incredibly blond of the old splash and the pale white of the new splash - after all the in game model is clearly blonde not albino. I also decreased the brightness in TeHjAcK's version.

edit2 added a version where it's half the original face half the old face, with a very slight shift in the lips - personally I think this is the best one, she looks elven but not so harsh, and there's a hint of a smile in the lips now. Plus I toned down the saturation/brightness 50% back to the original. http://i.imgur.com/4eEE3cX.jpg

edit added a version with the same face as the original but with the extra warmth on janna (plus slightly reduced the brightness in the clouds around janna) as some were asking, to compare.

Best tweak I've seen so far. +1.

I think TeHjAcK's face structure changes are unnecessary, but I LOVE what you've done with the saturation *and *warmth - it still retains some of that 'awesome blue/white sky staff power!' feel, while giving Janna back some of the liveliness I feel she needs.

The one change I would suggest would be to play with the warmth a bit. Specifically, I think the clouds around janna, and maybe janna's staff, could lose some warmth, while janna herself should maintain it.

The face is interesting cause some people love how it's not typical female - looks elfish etc. while others think its too angular and should be rounder/cuter etc.

So people seem to be split on the face. So I'll make a version without the face changes just to see, and I'll play around with the warmth around her.

I'll look forward to seeing what comes out of it! :)

Added a version with just changes to the colors, no face structure changes, reduced some of the brightness.

Hmm. After spending like a half an hour swapping between looking at different pictures, I have a lot of conflicting feelings. Let me try to sort out what I like and don't like:

  • I like the way Janna looks better when the picture has some warmth.
  • I like it when it seems like Janna's staff is stronger than the sun / when the clouds janna is summoning are blocking the sun.
    • Riot's version achieves this (partially) by removing much of the warmth.
      • Partially, because the staff doesn't quite glow bright enough, I feel.
    • Your edit2 (partially) achieves this by changing the shadows on Janna's face.
      • Partially, because the clouds don't seem like they've blotted out the sun quite as much in your version. Maybe there's a way to remove the saturation and warmth from the clouds, but increase the brightness/contrast
      • I also like the way Riot's shadows emphasize Janna's eyes. Maybe there's some middle ground that achieves the "illuminated by the staff / blotting out the sun," "warmth of janna's skin tone," and eye empasis.

This is a really great change! +1.

Rito please :C As a Janna main, I need this.

Nice. I like how she pops now; making her warmer really makes her stand out from the background.

Brilliant, those changes makes it look like Janna again.

Personally I feel like the biggest problem with the new (official) splash is the dissonance with how she is in game, especially her voice doesn't fit that kind of rather cold unanimate face. I like her better with warmth to her and a hint of some sort of smile.

The colors are indeed amazing, but you should've left Janna's face alone, there is nothing wrong with it.

Every female champion has the same face as it is. Heaven forbid we have one or two that don't follow the typical button nose/rounded chin & mouth formula.

Dustogrei1 votes

Added two other versions, one with the original face and another with half the new and half the old.

Now she just needs an actual facial expression.

Love the hair

As a Janna main, I have to say this looks amazing. It's a vast improvement and I hope Riot will agree with that soon^tm.

Yet Riot will probably never do anything about it

Numerous people complained about the Wukong splash, I myself posted a thread with color tweaks, and in the end it WAS changed.

Sukishoo2 votes

It was changed, but that was also before it went on the live server. They had many things they changed about that one though, such as Wukong's entire face was redone along with the hair shape and all hair color.

Ahri's I'm sure was pulled for a similar reason which is why we didn't get that, but Janna's they didn't really touch on as most of us find it to be pretty good.

Only other one already out that's getting changed is Graves but that's because of other issues from different regions of the world.

The Red Warden2 votes

That was before it went on live though, this would be a change to one that isn't directly needed because of political reasons (graves).

Besides usually when Riot has to change something they already released, it seems they would rather completely do it oven than just do a tiny change.

Hyrum Graff6 votes

I mean, we haven't seen them do small tweaks to things that have been pushed live before in the art department, but that's largely because the art department hasn't has as much to do in the way of reworks -- which is important because reworks, unlike new releases, should (IMO) preserve something about the character. If we look at something like the skarner rework, there was plenty of follow-up and small tweaks post-release.

Point being, now that art is doing reworks (in a way) of splash art, I don't think small tweaks are an unrealistic expectation.

I like how you increased Janna's color without losing the blue in the background, very well done.

The light from the staff is still a little too harsh, though. Its kind of distracting. Otherwise, a great improvement.

Dustogrei2 votes

Agreed, in the latest version I reduced the saturation/brightness.

This really feels like a completed piece. It looks really good! ^_^

Looks 100x better than the original

Poro Princess2 votes

So much better! :D The only issue I have with it now is that she still looks anorexic :c but I think that's a lot harder to change :/

Good work I like this warmer Janna a lot better than the live version, and why should elf´s have angular faces, makes no sense, if you really want to make something elfish then give her a hollow back(don’t know how you would do that, but that’s how elf`s were originally pictured in the folk tales)

wow! feeling is better than some!RIOT: Very tangled XD

I prefer the new one face

Good tweak, how about if she opens her mouth a little showing teeth, At least better than poker facing.

I can understand the upset over some of the other splash arts but really... this one is fine. The color changes are nice though.

Dustogrei2 votes

Myself I didn't really have issue with it either. But then I saw other people's edits on the boards, and I realized it really could look a lot better than it already does.

Kitein1 votes

I re-did the particles on Janna, the way I think would be best suited for her. please take this into consideration for her art work. I have a degree in Graphic Design as well.

i could of changed it, but i didn't want to make to many changes

The entire Janna art shail be totaly reworked in my opinion, not simly the clouring bad and her face got such manly shape, but the over done lights are unnecessarry. Thes small coloure changes and face shape changes wont make the entire art makes acceptable good. I dont get it what was the big deal with this artist made Janna such bad like this: Manly face, damn thin ribbonchast, awwfuly trimed breast, forgoten tatoos, over made brighting from her behind. Realy the only thing that realy remind me this art is about Janna thats her botom side and the staff in her hand (if those un needed glows would be removed from the yellow marbles). But thes little changes you could do, wont makes enugh good to be accaptable, I am afraid of that...

Dustogrei1 votes

So I would really like to hear what Riot's stance is on this. Unless they plan to make Janna's in-game model paler in the future to set her apart, I really don't see how her paleness in the splash is better than the proposed more alive colors.
