I hope this new champion has some clearer background and role lore-wise and isn't just another omnipotent "special" random mysterious spirit that has hardly any connections to existing champions.

Hardly any connections with existing champions, with Kalista and Tahm ? REALLY
Were you even there at Kalista's teasers ? They literally linked her to 7 champs while Tahm is omnipotent.
It very well looks lit it.
I wouldn't really group kalista with the other spirits. I mean she is an undead warrior after all.
